I had to leave my cakes cooling and leave for work. How long can they sit before I have to cover them. I won't be frosting them until this afternoon. Any suggestions will be helpful as if I need to, I will run home at lunch.
Thanks soooo much!

i've baked a cake in the morning, and only frosted them at night after the kids were in bed, and there wasn't any problem.

It should be fine. If it feels a little dry when you get home, a little simple syrup will do the trick!

Sometimes when I have to leave hot cakes, I cover with a towel. This way the heat can escape, and the air doesn't circulate over them and dry them out.

if you are doing a crumb coat before frosting just make sure you use a lot of very hot water with your crumb coat. it will soften up nicely...and you can alway cut the dry edges off is you need to. I also throw a kitchen towel over my hot cakes and they cool nicely and are still very soft.

Didn't even think to put a towel on them. Well, I'll be home in 2 hours so they should be ok. Thank you all for your help. I feel better now!
