Why are my royal flowers breaking? using the lily nail they have been drying for three days and when I peeled the foil off they started cracking. What can or should I do to prevent ALL of them from breaking in the future? I know they can break but all broke.

Try a very thin layer of vaseline . . . I hope this helps, it is devastating when your flowers break!

My instructer gave us these instructions and we didn't have any trouble.
First we lined them with really cheap foil (light weight)
Next we lightly coated with vegtable shorting,( I know they say you should not have royal come in contact with grease but it really had no affect on the flower)
Last we put holes in the bottom of the foil with a tooth pick. When we had the flower formed we carefully while they were wet, transfered to an egg cartoon and let dry.
It takes a few days, then gently remove foil. Hope this helps.
I just love have those on hand> Instant decorated cake!

thanks thumbs_up.gif
you are right babynewbear, I remember doing the ones in class with the cheap foil because I felt it was thinner than others and not to many broke, but I never tried the oil. But it doesn't hurt to try icon_biggrin.gif

Make sure you aren't using too much water when you mix the icing, also you can add some cream of tarter when you mix the icing this helps, also, I don't know where you are from, but it is extremely humid here in Hawaii and it takes 2 to 3 times longer for the flowers to dry. I've had a big problem with royal icing since I moved here and all of these things have helped me. It is super important not to add too much water, I add way less than the wilton recipe calls for.

Oh I wanted to clarify incase I was unclear, not vegtable Oil but something like crisco. Just wanted to make sure my tips were clear. Hope that helps. Good luck!
