Can someone tell me what sculpey is? I've seen people post models made with it, but I've never seen or heard of it before CC. Is it edible?
Sculpy is a brand of Polymer modeling clay, you can bake it to make hard permanent products. Its used to make beads, figures and other things.
It is very toxic to ingest, so what ever you do do not eat it! It will poison you.
But it'sa blast to play with.
I am surprised you haven't heard of it before. It's been around for at least 15 years. although I'm also surround by crafting and suppliers.
But try it out. It's a blast to use. If you decide to bake it, and use it often you may want to invest in some sculpy only supplies, so you dont accidently ingest it. If not use old utensils, and wash really well
I would advise NOT to use sculpy to decorate your cakes. It's a type of clay I believe, and toxic.
Fondant or gumpaste are better alternatives, are edible, and have a similar type of feel when you are modelling your decorations.
I have used sculpey to make impressions in fondant and it says non-toxic on the label........you have to read the label the toxicity depends on the brand and color of clay sometimes.....
sculpy, after is it PROPERLY baked in an oven -- ALL BY ITSELF with good ventilation -- becomes a rock-hard plastic, similar to any of those resin/ceramic figurines you can buy. the chief difference is you can play with it in so many ways (watch the Carol Duval show -- she seems to have someone one at least, if not twice a week, with some new polymer clay craft. The techniques and tools they used are easily adapted for use w/ fondant and gumpaste.)
edited to add: many of the crafts are some type of jewelry that come into direct skin contact -- necklaces, bracelets, etc. so it is safe AFTER baking
I reiterate what NMyers01 mentioned: use separate tools for each so as to avoid all risk of cross contamination.
no one will mistake a properly baked one for something edible -- and if they do, well, you may be going to the dentist for a chipped tooth! more likely to become either a projectile or "bash" toy in the hands of a child -- and a chatcka (sp?) require dusting in the hands of an adult.
after proper baking it should be as safe as any other purchased plastic or cermaic product -- and a lot more personalized. Of course practice good cake hygene and place some time barrier under it...foil, plastic warp, or even a small cake board. Depending upon size, the finished piece can be heavy and start to sink in to the cake (think like you have to do for wedding cake toppers)
Here's a link to a site of a woman who does custom wedding cake toppers made out of polymer clay -- WOW is all I can say!
Thumbprint Kids
It's much more stable once it is baked (mine say non-toxic too)... I only ever use it for toppers, and I always put some sort of base under it (to protect the keepsake as much as the cake!)
