How tall are your layers when you do a stacked cake?

Mine are usually about 4 1/2 inches tall. I bake 2 inch cakes, trim what I need to and then have about 1/2 inch of filling. If it is just a single layer cake then I do a 3 inch high cake, torte it, fill it and it becomes 4 inches high.

It all depends on your recipe, the size of pans you are using (and how much you fill them)... what kind of filling you use, whether or not you are torting the layers, etc.

Mine tend to finish at about 5-6" tall, but that's 2 cakes torted & filled (= 4 layers of cake & 3 of filling), topped w/ BC & fondant!

i usually use a lot of batter in each pan and cut off the excess cake before turning out of pan. I end up with tall layers. I love tall layers - the more cake the better icon_smile.gif

The one caution is if you go over 6 inches high, it will be hard to fit the slice nicely on a serving plate. Many brides are opting for very high cakes but hotels don't usually serve cake on a dinner plate so that is something for them to keep in mind.
