Have had some requests for the Eggless, Butterless, Milkless cake so I'm just going to post it:

Butterless, Eggless, Milkless Cake

l C. brown sugar, firmly packed
1 1/4 C. water
1/3 C. vegetable shortening or lard
2/3 C. raisins
1/2 t. nutmeg
2 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. powdered cloves
1 t salt
1 t baking soda
2 t. water
2 C. sifted all-purpose flour
1 t. baking powder

Boil brown sugar, 1 1/4 C. water, shortening, raisins, and spices together for 3 min. Cool. Add salt and baking soda which has been dissolved in 2t water. Gradually add the flour and baking powder which have been sifted together, beating smooth after each addition. Bake in a greased and floured 8" x 8" x 2" pan in a moderate oven of 325 degrees F. about 50 min. or until done. Needs no frosting.

First time I've ever seen where you mix the baking soda with water first. I wonder if that is something they used to do. This cookbook is OLD!

my favorite was and still is my grandmothers strawberry cake. She does it always when her own strawberries are ready. really simple cake ( i can never get it right though) It is sponge cut half filled with fresh cream where she adds a little gelatine and lemonpeel with lemon juice. puts many strawberries in the middle and on top. Mmmm yummy.

It was a very elegant desert. She was a very proper german who had dinner parties quite often. Damn, that lady could cook! She also got me to love old fashion rye with butter, ham and liverworst sandwiches! OMG!

Too bad! No, neither of those desserts I posted is very elegant (unless Jello and Dream Whip are elegant! lol)
I wonder if it was a German recipe? I hope someday you find it!

When I was young my mom always made those gooey butter cakes using a yellow cake mix. I loved those and still do. I make it every once in a while for my family. When I was a teenager I fell in love with Duncan Hines Caramel cake mix with cream cheese frosting. (the duncan hines canned kind) I know, I know, this is the only cake I will eat that stuff on. It brings back lots of memories. If you haven't tried that cake mix, do its awesome.

I found a recipe in one of my cookbooks called "Wacky Cake." I wonder if it's similar?
It doesn't call for eggs and looks like it'd be very cheap to make.

Wacky Cake

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3 TBS cocoa
1 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
5 TBS oil
1 TBS vinegar
1 cup water

Bake at 350º for 25 minutes. (No mention of pan size.)

Frosting:

6 TBS evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
4 TBS butter

Boil 3 minutes, remove, and add 1 tsp vanilla and a rounded TBS cocoa.

I was always baking something when I was little. My favorite was always a basic yellow cake with vanilla frosting. The best part about my adventures as a kid was that I still have the cookbooks I used with notes in them.

Like, "Don't bake the cookies longer than it calls for or they will burn." icon_lol.gif

Triplemom,

I think I have this recipe and it takes an 8" square pan. From what I remember you put the dry ingredients in the pan and make four wells and put each of the liquids in a well and then stir it up in the pan. Does that sound familiar? That's why it is called "Wacky Cake".

I always wanted french vanilla for my birthday, that was the only time of year we got to pick. My father always has to have chocolate or he throws a fit, for the really little kids he would talk them into chocolate and a couple brothers always wanted it. One of my brothers lives at home and if you ask him what kind of cake to make he says "anything but chocolate."

HollyPJ and lionladydi,

I think those are closer to the recipe I was thinking of! I have printed off the first one you sent me lionladydi cuz anything with cloves in it has my name on it! Weird, I know, but I have developed a taste for spicy desserts, can't get enough of 'em!

For our 'Crazy Cake' we did indeed make wells in the dry ingredients to put the wet ones in. This was my first lesson in following recipe directions. My Mom and I were making this cake (I must have been about 7 or icon_cool.gif and I thought I would just throw everything in when her back was turned, why waste the time? icon_eek.gif I did not know what baking soda and vinegar did when mixed however I soon found out! I remember my Mom being mad at me and I can still hear her, "That is why you READ it first and then follow the steps!"

Yep, Mom did, and still does, know best! icon_biggrin.gif

Because I spent so much time with my Great-Grandparents, we had all kinds of differnt cakes, flavors etc. I don't remember specifics, because it's been over 25 years and I wasn't passed those recipes from the family secrets. But they were always scratch made cakes.

The one thing that always stuck in my head was that I've eaten more cupcake ice cream cones than cones with actual ice cream in them, in my lifetime. Must have been one of those circles that somes around every so many years, because they're popular again now.

mbelgard, I'm laughing at your post because that was the only time of the year we got to pick what cake we wanted too! I always got a white cake with banana cream filling. OMG, I LOVED those! I have not had one in a few decades (I don't think I've had any bdays in that time either) icon_biggrin.gif

Vitade-that half-half bundt cake drizzled with chocolate is a German staple. Go to any German lady's house and ther will be one, guaranteed icon_lol.gif

If you can remember anything else about the raspberry dessert, let me know. I can probably help you out.

Was it a crusty nut layer, a whipped layer and then those 2 repeated with raspberry sauce drizzled over the top? What color were the crusy layers? Were the crusty layers like flour and crushed nuts mixed or more like a merengue and crushed nuts mix?

Well when I was little my Mom would always get a "Lemon Cheese Cake" from Smoak's Bakery in Augusta Georgia for my Birthday. I love those cakes!!!!! However, It's not a "Cheesecake". It's like a yellow cake with a lemon filling iced with buttercream icing. Hmmmmm I don't know where the Cheese part comes in. Maybe I made up the name? I should call them and ask. Now I'm curious!!! LOL

My favorite was an angel food cake with the fluffy "beat & eat" frosting as my mom called it (sugar, cream of tartar, egg whites, boiling water...kind of tastes like marshmallows) The reason being is that my mom NEVER made a cake that you took out of the pan, except angel food, because you had to! I always liked how it looked like a "real" birthday cake instead of something in a pan. Even as a kid I was concerned with presentation, kind of funny!

cande,

Wow, it would be great if you could give me the names of these desserts and/or recipes so I could try to make them!! What I can remember of the raspberry one, the crusty layers were probably ground hazel nut? I can't really remember about the whipped layer but what you described sound like it could be. She always waited to drizzle the sauce till you going to eat it. Otherwise it would of just made it mushy.

OMG, I can remember her watching her bake and everything she used was written in German. I couldn't even tell you what the ingredience were.

I would appreciate ANYTHING you could give me on this!! I just happened to notice your in Germany!! Have you had either of these?
