Am I dreaming or didn't there used to be a policy here about posting pictures of other decorators' cakes and either you had to identify the decorator or state you didn't know whose pictures they were. Has this changed recently, I notice a lot of pictures being posted with nothing stated about whose pictures the cakes are.

Thanks Squirrelly,
I just went back through my posts to & made sure I gave credit to the decorators for pictures I was posting. The only thing I had written on some of them is that I got them from different websites...you caught me being lazy icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif I will remember to post the decorator or website from now on

When I read your post, I felt like a little kid who snuck the last piece of cake icon_biggrin.gif

No, no kiddo, I just remember it as being policy and it was mentioned to me so I wanted to check. It has been something that has been happening a lot lately and I am not sure if policy has changed or people aren't aware or if it was just something people did that we thought was policy. Wasn't singling anyone out at all, lots of people have done it.

Thank you, Squirrelly! Photos of cakes just keep popping up with no reference at all to where the photos came from or who may have decorated the cake, and I know that could cause problems for CC,
that pesky copyrite business, again, I guess.
Janice

PS it is bothering me that folks are posting a cake photo in the contests and at the same time posting the same cake (sometimes a different photo) in their gallery...so much for the one cake/one photo rule and anonymity in the contests!

Squirrelly: I know you weren't singling anyone out, but I'm glad you mentioned it. I will be more aware from now on. You know I love ya icon_biggrin.gif

is it ok to post links instead of pictures to other decorators sites to show a cake?

Yes. The idea is to give credit where credit is due. Posting a name or site address with a picture is a great way to give credit. We have talked about people that post pictures on their own sites from other cake decorators, isn't posting them here, with out credit, along the same lines?

I'm not saying that anyone here is stealing or saying the cakes are theirs, but it is important to let people know where the picture/cakes is from. If you don't know where it is from then you should atleast state that.

This is not allowed and you should PM Jackie if you come across this.

I noticed this a while ago and I pointed it out. So I refused to vote after that so that I was not being influenced or being biase.

Same here SQC Ma I recall a thread from last month where I mentioned it to another member and someone else piped up about how some people like to get narky and it's done on the net all the time.

Like I pointed out in that thread, It can cause serious issues for the website/website owner if photos are used without permission.

Well it has been two days since this was posted, and no official response...should we assume that it is okay to post pictures of just anybody's cakes in the forums? Janice

If you want an official" response to anything, the best way is to either post in technical support, or email Jackie or I and request an official ruling on something.

Jackie and I generally only gloss over the posts in areas other than Technical Support or Suggestions, so we will not notice alot of things directed toward us if they are in other areas.

so here is an official response: if you post a picture that is not yours, just make sure credit is given. If you submit an article and want to include a photo that is not yours, you need written permission from the owner of the photo to use it.

Re: cakes being entered in the contest AND then resubmitted on the board - I did PM someone about that (Jackie, I believe) back during the Thanksgiving contest. I didn't get a response and so just assumed it wasn't something the moderators were concerned about. I'm glad to know there is an official "thought" on this as I think it stinks that some people play by the rules and therefore get no feedback on something they've worked hard on while others get lots of feedback when they're in violation of the rules.

I did send Jackie a PM on Wednesday after Heath's response, regarding three cake photos posted at the same time in both the contest and individual gallery.

As of this evening there are two more, don't know if I should bother Jackie with another PM or not.

After a while you begin to feel like anything goes for some members, while others obey the rules and guidelines. I agree with you, Cranberry Clo, I think it stinks. Janice

Yes please do continue to send Jackie the PM's, she will address them as quickly as she can.

I know it is frustrating that it continues to happen, but with the rate at which new people are constantly joining the community, I think it is bound to continue to happen. Even though we post rules, people tend to skim over them and miss some of the details and do not realize they are in violation until Jackie or I contact them about it.

Hmmm...I am not certain to whom we are referring.. to but I do know that I listed my cake in the gallery then, the contest was announced the same day and had been commented on, so as far as secrecy etc it was too late. Since we know that it's OK to MOVE your cake from another gallery to the contest, I would assume that we would expect to recognize some of the cakes.

Either way, the prize is small and I have always felt this was a contest more to showcase and have fun than for folks to whine about. This will be my last contest entry, too much drama for me. Whats the real difference in someone having their cake in more than one gallery and some not having a program to show several different views in one frame or like myself being to computer illiterate to know how to use the program?

I PMed Jackie about it for during the christmas contest and this the response I got:

There is no specific rule in place yet that says the photo cannot also be in another gallery simultaneously.

We usually delete the photos from the other galleries when we find them. A lot of times people will first upload to the Holidays->Christmas album, then realize thats not the contest folder, then re-upload to the contest album. I am the only one that can delete or edit photos once they are uploaded, so for the most part its not people being sneaky, or trying to get ahead somehow in the contest, just a mistake. If you know of a specific image that is listed in another album please let me know an I will remove it.

But I have noticed it happening a lot and that they probably were not a mistake because they are uploaded back to back... but since there is no rule then it can continue....I guess if it really bugs you you can PM Jackie with the photos... I probably just got myself in trouble by saying too much!! tapedshut.gif

anyways I HTH

-Kayday

I hadn't noticed yours, Kayday, but I have seen many who enter one view in the contest and then the same view and several others of the same cake in the gallery. While you may think I'm whining (your word, my verb tense), I'm simply trying to clarify what the rules are. The response directly following yours was immensely helpful - it made it clear that the moderators here don't have a cut and dry rule posted on this and that's fine. That's what I wanted to know.

Here's my perspective: I worked really hard on my final cake for the Wilton III class. I entered it in the Thanksgiving contest just to see how it would get voted on, but in doing so, I knew that because it was supposed to be anonymous I shouldn't place it in the regular gallery as well. That meant no comments and I wanted those - the cake was, in my opinion, fun but missing some finishing touches. I found, when all was said and done, that reading people's feedback is far more important to me than seeing a rating and so haven't and won't enter any other cakes in the contest.

So, you may see it as whining or drama. I see people looking for a clarification of the rules and you've become offended by that. That's too bad and I hope you see that it's not about you or any other one person, specifically.

Christy

Actually, I did send a Pm to both a moderator and Jackie about 1-2 weeks ago. But perhaps with the problems with the site and/or my computer, neither were received. Thanks for the response, just wanted to be certain what the policy was.
