can anyone tell me the best tools to use to make free form shapes out of mmf? how do you get the blade or edge to cut cleanly without leaving a bumpy edge? I i tried dipping in hot water, but that made everything get sticky

I use these sharp little knives I get from Pampered Chef for $1 ea. When one gets dull, I just toss it. The blade is small and thin and really sharp. If the fondant is thick and sticky, you can grease the blade with a little shortening.
