I've got both the Cake Mix Doctor and the Chocolate Cake Mix Doctor books on loan from the library, and a free day with no orders. I am wondering what recipes from these books you recommend trying. All of the pictures look yummy and I can't decide. So, for those of you who have used these books, please share what you liked best. Thanks!

I just made the Devishly Good Chocolate Cake from the original CMD book...with just one variation. I used melted butter in place of the oil that the recipe calls for, and it was soooooo yummmy!!!! I made two cake last week with the same cake.. one was that cake layered with butterscotth pudding as the filling frosted with Chocolate Cream Cheese icing and the other one was that cake layered with a non-dairy raspberry cream filling frosted with Chocolate Cream Cheese icing. The second one was soooo rich I only had a 1" x 1" piece and I was in heaven and could not have anymore.
I've also made the chocolate amaretto cake and that was yummy too!
I really like the Bride's White cake for making white cakes, it is very moist and yummy.
I made the Lemon Cheese bars also and I got rave reviews on it. It's a great book, best investment I ever made in the cake decorating business.

The brides cake on page 192 I believe. That is what I made for my brothers wedding in January and then put whipped icing on it. Also the Finger Licking Good cake is yummy too!

I made the Fresh Orange cake, only in layers instead of a bunt, and used the Orange Cream Cheese frosting. It was soo good!! It may be a new family favorite.

I made the Darn Good Chololate cake. It was good, but make sure you have milk to go with it! The only change I noted to make was to use mini chocolate chips. I found that the regular size ones all sunk to the bottom. I'm thinking the mini ones will be fine.

There are a few strawberry recipes. This one had fresh strawberries. I tell you there is no other strawberry taste like it. I won't buy a strawberry mix again!

I love the Darn Good Chocolate Cake, but I prefer making it with a chocolate fudge or German chocolate mix instead of Devils Food.

I absolutely love the peaches n' cream cake pg70. However, it is always best the first day. It isn't bad after that it just isn't as peachy tasting. I've had both books for about 6 months and they come in handy in a pinch.

the chocolate pistachio from the 1st book is wonderful!!! Also, the cannoli cake! The bananas foster is yummy as well. I, too, haven't made a bad cake using her recipes.

My only negative thing is that there are a lot of recipes that are repeated throughout the books or changed very minimally from one to another. Let us know what you decide and how it comes out!

On the CMD--the Humming Bird cake is yummy/and watch the nuts so that you don't over roast. Choco chip pecan bunt yummy. Choco pound cake--short version of that Darn Good Choco cake--yummy--i did not have chips. In the choco CMD the suprise muffins yummy but I did not put the glaze on. Can't remember which one the German chocolate cake is in but yummy again. You'll need to cook the frosting a bit longer like 20 mins instead of the 11-12 mins. And you can put it in the fridge to help it thicken. And remember to purchase all the stuff to make that specific cake. I look and go oops don't have that and look for one that I have all the stuff. I am going to invest in a tube pan too. I also got the cup cake book but have yet to bake anything from it. Have fun!

I made a strawberry cake recipe from the cake doctor book. Made with fresh strawberries mashed and strawberry gelatin added to a white cake mix. It is to die for with some cream cheese frosting.

Euphoriabakery-did you make the triple decker strawberry or the one before it that has the coconut added?? Just wondering because I need one this weekend and cant decide.

This isn't a cake, but the peanut butter chocolate bars are amazing!!! Its my husbands favorite thing in this world. I often send them to work with him. (He's a restaurant manager) and all of them go crazy!!! They think i'm some kind of baking goddess.... they will never now its from a cake mix!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! (one tip on these... do not overbake they are so good and gooey!) thumbs_up.gif

Oh I made the one with the coconut, but left out the coconut. And just used a plain cream cheese frosting instead of the frosting they list, it was too runny to ice with. It would probably be good as is, but my family just doesn't like coconut.

Devishly Good Chocolate Cake
1 square (1oz) unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
1/2 cup water
1 pkg (18.25 oz) plain devil's food cake mix
1 pkg (3.9 oz) chocolate instant pudding
4 large eggs
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
Preheat oven to 350F
Place the chocolate and water in a small saucepan over low heat, constantly stir until the chocolate is melted. Set aside once melted.
Place the cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Gently fold in the melted chocolate. Mix with mixer until well mixed. The batter will be thick and well combined.
Pour into prepared pan and bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes
I substituted melted butter for the amount of oil in the recipe.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
1 pkg (8oz) cream cheese, at room temperature
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (I prefer using 1 cup)
1 teaspoon pure almond extract or pure vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners sugar, sifted
Cream the cream cheese and butter in a large mixing bowl. Then add the cocoa powder, extract, and confectioners' sugar and blend with the mixer on low speed until ingredients are moistened. Beat on medium until fluffy
Makes approximately 4 cups.

I made the Darn Good Chocolate Cake with vanilla buttercream icing last week. Wow...it was sooo good! I thought it was a little better the second day because I think I overbaked a tad, so the moisture seeped in after a day or two. I used 2 6" heart pans instead of the bundt. I actually used large chips (bigger than average) and they didn't sink to the bottom. I used Betty Crockers "triple chocolate fudge" as the starter since it's what I had on hand and vanilla pudding. Sooo yummy!

Darn Good Chocolate Cake
1 box devils food or dark chocolate fude cake mix
1 3.9 oz package of chocolate pudding mix
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup oil
4 large eggs
1.5 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Lightly mist 12 cup bundt pan with oil, then flour.

Place cake mix, pudding mix, sour cream, water, oil and eggs in large mixing bowl. Blend for 1 minute at low speed. Increase speed to medium and beat 2-3 minutes more. Batter should be thick and well combined. Fold in chocolate chips, making sure are well distributed. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 until cake springs back when lightly pressed with finger and just starting to pull away from the sides, 58-62 minutes.

My other favorite recipe is one I found on the CMD website in July for White Almond Sour Cream cake. Fantastic!! I made it with raspberry jam filling and almond buttercream a few weeks ago and one lady said it was the best cake she'd ever had "and I like cake", she said. icon_smile.gif
