Okay I need to know... Is it just me or are the Cake Topper (Barbie, Doll) What ever you want to call them... Are they just terrible... I was so discusseded with my Wedding shower cake topper I have been trying to find an alternative buying spot but am having no luck... Does anyone know where I can get those lovely items but made so that the hair is 3 big clumps and actually looks NICE... Also mini Crowns for cakes... Thanks all... Kristin
The barbie pick is a waste of money. The hair is just awful. You can use a real barbie and a 9in round underneath the doll cake. If you still want to use a pick, then I'd just buy a dollar store barbie and remove the legs.
I have swapped heads as an alternative too...just put a barbie head on the pick! I agree the picks are kina scarry!!
lol! I thought I was bad from bringing up leg removal so early in the morning. Now, we're on to head swapping.
LOL!!! Poor Barbies!!!!! What we do for the cake!!! My daughter had a headless barbie for a while!! Too funny!!
I cut the hair off of the picks for some princess cakes and made my own hair out of fondant. I can't understand why they make them with such awful hair.
I hate those picks!! I remove barbie's legs and put a dowel rod in as a pick. (boy, does that sound demented or what!!) It works, though!!
I use a real Barbie and simply wrap her bottom half really, really well in plastic wrap before sticking her in the cake.

Personally, I find all of the doll toppers a little spooky. But that's just me. My daughter isn't old enough to want one yet, but I'm sure they're in my future...
I use to think all doll cakes were just awful and ugly and thought they were just the worse cake EVER b/c of the heads!!!
That is until I joined this site and saw all the beautiful cakes done w/'real' barbies. Now I can't wait to get an order for one!!!
I bought a cinderella doll and took her head off and put it on the Wilton body... see the photos. Once I saw a mermaid on a 3 year old cake and when the Mom lifted it off the cake she said ... "Any one want to like the mermaids bottom"
I too prefer wrapping the dolls in Saran. I only learned to do this after I made one for my god-child about 10 years ago and pulled the pointy ended doll out of the cake. I thought her eyes were going to fall out of her head, poor little 3 year old. She still remembers.
You briefly asked about crowns at the end of your post. I like to make them out of gum paste or fondant and dry them on parchment wrapped paper towel tubes (so they'll slide off easily). Decorate any way you'd like!
I agree that the doll picks aren't the most attractive.
However, I did use one once and just gave her a really nice up-do and trimmed her bangs a bit so they weren't in her face.
She actually looked pretty nice!
Thanks everyone I took your advise... This summer I'm going to go garage selling for old barbie so I can use those instead of buying new barbies... Thanks Kristin
Believe it or not, I take my Barbie pic to the beautician
I just found three lovely Barbies at the Thrift Store and will be taking them to the beautician...their hair is trully wild
We do the barter system...hair does for cakes
I didn't get to take my yellow Barbie to the beautician...I did her hair and as you can see, it was a mess
