Opportunity Is Knockin' At My Door!

I did a search a while back for wedding coordinators in my area, and finally located one. (I do not live in a very upscale locale.) I sent her an email and asked if she had a preferred vendor list, etc. Well, she called me 2 days ago to order a small Valentine's cake, to taste and see one of my decorated cakes in person! I'm so excited and nervous, all at once! She wants the cake covered in fondant, which I have not worked with much. I've been scouring my yearbooks, the gallery, etc. looking for the perfect Valentine's design. I want it to be frilly and bridal looking, but also want to keep in mind that she will be actually serving this to dinner guests at her home, so I don't want to go too overboard. I'd love to hear some ideas if you've got 'em! Thanks!
maybe do a 2-tier cake....how many people does it need to serve?? I would cover in white fondant, w/a red ribbon, and red ribbon roses around the cake.
How about a pastel pink heart-shaped cake with cornelli lace in white on top and white drop strings on the sides with some white roses for accents. It would be frilly and bridal-like, but elegant, and it would show her what you're capable of. Congratulations and good luck with your meeting!! You must be really excited!!
I saw some real pretty heart shape cakes in the contest part on this site . Maybe you could get some ideals from lookin at them. By the way good luck and happy baking.
Stacy,
After speed-drying my fondant roses in the food dehydrator (LIFE SAVER!!) here is the cake I am giving to the wedding consultant. The design was inspired by a small engagement cake shown in the 2005 Wilton yearbook, but it isn't an exact replica. I have a couple of other cakes due for Valentine's day, but I felt like so much potential was riding on this cake that it's the only one I worked on today (aside from baking, anyways). I am still nervous and excited, but feel much better now that the cake is done.
Very nice job, I hope this works well for you, it is such good break into the Wedding business. Good Luck
That is so gorgeous!! It kind of has a victorian feel to it...I love it. I see many wedding cakes in your future.
Very pretty! Will you now be a cake vendor for the wedding consultant? Is that why you were searching? Just curious. This may be something I should check into for the future.
Sweetbaker,
Yes, the wedding consultant will now include me as a recommended vendor when she makes suggestions to brides that she is working with. There had been a discussion here that talked about this subject and how much commision is standard, etc. It got my wheels spinning and I tracked her down. Thursday I will be stopping in at a new 'One Stop Wedding Shop' in town to make myself known to them as well. I think I'll make a small cake for the employees to butter them up a little!
Thank you Angie & Mrs Missey! My meeting with Caroline (the wedding consultant) was last night, and went very well. She was impressed with the cake and my portfolio. Her hubby is a professional photographer, and had a little spot all set up to take photos of my cake for her files. It was pretty cool! I left her a stack of business cards to hand out. Now I'll just have to see what comes of it!
