Decorating on ganache?

I've never decorated a cake covered with ganache. I think I'm going to do Cali4dawn's Chocolate Explosion Cake, with chocolate buttercream filling and icing, covered in chocolate ganache. I figured that might look a little dull, and wondered if buttercream flowers worked on top of ganache?

My dad is a huge chocoholic and thought I would surprise him this weekend.

I've always used candy clay and chocolate drizzle on top of my ganache cakes...I'm sure buttercream would work just fine. In fact, the cake you're talking about making is giving me a craving for chocolate right now!!!!!!!!! YUMMY!!!!!

Buttercream flowers would look fine, in fact some people use them to cover up "mistakes" on the ganache.

or make some roses from chocolate candyclay YUM it tastes like tootsie rolls

I posted a picture of a Ganached covered cake I did. It was the frist one I did, so Its ok. It has buttercream borders, and put in the center to look like a pillow for a Chocolate molded slipper/shoe.

Becky ~ that cake looks great! How do you do the whipped ganache? Is it just the regular ganache, whipped? (ok, that sounded funny, LOL!)

I've never seen candyclay, but it sounds interesting!

I used ganache on the outside of the cake and then added the remains of my buttercream to the left over ganache to make the center. I added enough to make it a mousse like texture.

to get a whipped or truffle like center you use :
1 part cream to two parts chocolate.

Candy clay is made by melting chocolate and then stirring in corn syrup it will harden and can be used like playdough knead it and it becomes soft like fondant. I use the fake stuff (chocolate flavored for almond bark) but I bet real chocolate would be much better!

I saw a cake that was covered in choc ganache and it had white and yellow brushed embroidery flowers. It was lovely. It seems to me it was one of Dawn's cakes.

I just looked and found the one you mentioned, Lisa...it is one of Dawn's and is beautiful.

I'll have to see if I can figure out how to do the brushed embroidery flowers...it's really pretty!

You're welcome. Dawn may have some special pointers about doing it on ganache.

Absolutely do not let that hot water drip from the brush onto the ganache. You will be very very sad. So be careful.

Use hot water to brush the buttercream out.

Make and brush only one petal at a time. When the buttercream starts to set, it doesn't brush out well at all.. ask me! I know!!

I used the pink rose cutter to make my flower outlines onto the ganache. I lightly pressed it onto the ganache where I wanted the flower then went over the lines with the buttercream.

I can't wait to see yours. I've also done the ganache cake with a ruffle swag around the sides and yellow roses on top (I just love yellow on chocolate).
