I was making fondant for cakes and cookies and my daughter (3 yrs old) of course wanted to use her rolling pin..... she made "cookies". Tried to explain to her it was frosting, but she was quite insistent that we bake her cookies. So to humor her we put the plastic cutting board (one of those cheap ones from IKEA that is flexible) with her "cookies" in the oven. There was a voice in the back of my head that said I would forget.......

So today I preheated the oven to make tater tots......... I think I ruined the oven!!!!!! There is gooey plastic melted all over the oven icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I just got the oven, it was NOT CHEAP!

Anyone know if homeowners covers stupidity?

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry! I really need to get in the habit of looking in before I turn it on too!

Usually it is a pan or something I leave inside, you would think I would know better about PLASTIC!

Has anyone else done this? Did it ruin your oven or is there hope for me?

Would it be a bad idea to put the oven on the cleaning mode?

Oh, and I'm pregnant, I'm sure all those toxic fumes were fabulous for me!

Found this on the web:

Scrape off as much as you can. the plastic will stick to the inside a little bit, but it usually prys right off with a little encouragement (use something like a paint scraper). It helps if you turn on the oven for a few minutes prior to start, not long enough to get hot, but long enough to get real warm. this will soften the plastic so that it lets go easier. If you get it too hot, the plastic will melt again and you do not want that. Make it just warm enough so that it is not uncomfortable to reach inside for several minutes. Once it gets a little warm, you should be able to scrape the rest off.

HTH!

Yes, your homeowners insurance should cover it. I am an adjuster for one of the biggies. We laugh about stupidity being covered!!!! To get techincal for a moment - your oven is considered part of your dwelling and most policy are all risk - meaning that they cover almost peril with a few exceptions. Your content items are covered on a named peril basis - and unfortunately stupidity isn't one of them. Your company will first try to see if the oven can be repaired and if not then it should be replaced.

I made that exact same mistake a couple of weeks ago, (although I remembered before it melted too much) so you're not the only idiot!!!

After it had cooled down, it came off with a knife quite easily.

man you can tell it's late. My grammar was terrible. What I meant to say is that most policies for dwelling are all risk.

I accidently turned on the bottom oven that I store my plastic measuring cups, spoons, and bowls a couple of months ago. The smell went through the whole house, it was horrid! Someone here on CC gave me this tip; make a paste with baking soda and water, plop it on the plastic that is stuck to the oven and let it sit for 10-15minutes, then it will come up. Some of the bigger pieces I had to repeat the process and then they came up, then I just cleaned the oven of the paste residue. I tried turning on the oven and getting it soft again, but it made a bigger mess. I hope it helps!

I am sorry this happened to your new oven. I hope you can get if off without much trouble. We all make silly mistakes sometimes. I think that is just part of being human.

My new frustration is trying to get the new shelves. My husband used a CHISEL and a GIANT RUBBER MALLET to chisel out the plastic (there is still some residue in the bottom, we're going to try the baking soda and water paste). But I need to order 2 new shelves, so I have a Kenmore Elite, dual fuel 40 inch, 5 burner, 2 ovens (the big one is a convection oven) and there is NO MODEL NUMBER ANYWHERE icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif Believe me I have looked over every square inch inside and out. I looked online to try and get the model number and apparently the model number online that SAYS manufacturer model number is NOT the specific model number.. HUH?!! I finally called Sears and they were NO HELP AT ALL! If I don't have the model number there is nothing they can do! HUH? I have a lot of very specific details about this oven, you should be able to easily identify it by the description, it isn't like they have a lot of models of this type, actually there is only ONE Kenmore Elite dual fuel with 2 ovens. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gif

So we have to take the physical shelves down to the parts center (which by the way is NOT at Sears, it is somewhere else I have to find) to see if maybe they can match up the shelves.......... grrrr. I NEED TO BAKE HERE PEOPLE!

Does your oven self-clean? Could you just turn that on and get out of there?

Also, if you want the model number, could you get that from wherever you bought the oven from?

What are the chances that the model number is on the receipt? I completly understand. We bought a camera from Sears with a warranty and I have to drive it to the middle of nowhere to get it fixed. Not one of the several stores in the area! UGH! I wish you the best! I know locally we have a scratch and dent wharehouse for Sears. Maybe you could get parts there (somewhere similar)?!

I bought the oven from a friend. They bought it and then bought a new house and the developer said if they put in their own stove it would void the warranty on the house! So they sold it to me for a bargain $1500 so I don't have a receipt. They don't even have the user manual, let alone the receipt! I'm just mad a Sears for being so unhelpful! There should be some ways to look up a model number besides the model number!

And I swear it is not on the oven! I'm not stupid! It really isn't there. I may be pregnant and have pregnant brain, but I think I can tell if there is a label somewhere on the oven! icon_mad.gif

The worst part is today is possibly the last day of my jury duty (we only started MONDAY!) and I won't be able to bring cookies for everyone icon_sad.gificon_cry.gif

I know I would feel bad about not having cooies to bring too. icon_sad.gif

If it's a new model it should have sel-cleaning on it.

Be careful with home owners insurance. It is a good idea, but my friend premium went sky high after putting in a claim. It would have been cheaper to just pay for it.

Let us know how it goes

icon_smile.gif Okay, I am NOT laughing at you, but rather with you. I have done worse things than that I am quite sure, and I feel your pain. "Let God shine on your problems". Say a prayer for peace, have a glass of wine, and chill out before you pass out. Everything is going to be fine in the end, and you will be back to baking fabulously!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets "pregnant brain." My husband very good naturedly teases me about it constantly, until he sees it's one of my bad (hormonal days) and I start crying. At which point, he very quickly apologizes.

Having said that, you probably already checked this, but some of these appliances don't have stickers or anything truly visible with the model number on it. But, sometimes they have it sorta embossed or engraved on the back or bottom so that's it's really hard to see. It might be worth a check.

don't know if this is the oven you have or not, but it has the sears item and manufacturer number on the page under the brand/type. from what you described, this looks like it would be it. i hope this helps. good luck.

Self Cleaning makes the oven SUPER HOT and turns everything to carbon, which is how it "cleans", you get to sweep the carbon out.......

Plastic......... doesn't carbonize so well I think. We tried just turning on the oven to see how we did on chiseling it out....... quickly abandoned that idea.

I did some research. The side oven (8.5 inches wide) rack is only $20, so the big racks can't be too expensive so I'm just going to pay it out of pocket. The chisel worked pretty good and hopefully once we do the baking soda thing that was suggested....... I'll be back to baking.

Oh, and I turned on the side oven this morning, thought I could at least make SOME in the tiny oven..... but my husband threw out 1/2 to 3/4 batch of cookie dough I made the other day!!!!!!!!! ACK! So had to totally abandon ship icon_rolleyes.gifthumbsdown.gif

My school has this "freeze" spray that we use to clean up really sticky, hard stuff at school, and it works really well.
You will need to see if it can be used in an oven, but if you cleaned it out well I think it would work.

Homeowners insurance should cover it. I did the same thing. Melted a tuperware bowl I was raising pizza dough in. Caught the whole thing on fire. House filled up with toxic smoke, nasty. Fire department came and, it being a Sunday evening in Burbank, made quite a show of bringing out my burnt lumps of dough to the front lawn (in view of all my neighbors). It took 5, yes 5, firemen to douse those poor lumps of charcoal. My stove was an antique O'Keefe and Merritt, and I loved it icon_cry.gif . Worse thing was that a story about a crazy lady who melted plastic was circulating and actually got back to me. icon_redface.gif
Love those firemen! They even told me not feel I needed to bake them any cookies. So....are you the world's biggest idiot? If you are, you are not alone! icon_biggrin.gif
