Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be attmepting to make a cake like this for my little one's first birthday in the next couple of weeks. but I'm kinda stuck for ideas, can anyone out here help me out? I figured I'd make a jelly roll cake for the body, but I wasn't sure whether to make the head out of cake or use a styrofoam dummy for the head. I'm going to be placing this cake on top of a sheet cake as there will be many people here....more than just the eeyore cake alone will feed. So if anyone can take a look at the pic and give me any ideas for icing or decorating I'd truly appreciate it. I thought about fondant, but was told that it tastes terrible, and then I heard about rolled buttercream and mmf, but it's all so confusing....this is my first 3d cake.....so like I said, any help is greatly appreciated!

I would say in that picture that it is covered in fondant. Some people don't like fondant period(like myself), though some like the mmf a lot better. My 7 year old niece actually came back and asked for cake with the mmf on it. You could just use buttercream if you wanted, just make sure to do a really good crumb coat. Its totally up to you if you would want to use styrofoam for the head, though I would say from that picture that they did use cake. If that picture was taken from here, you could always pm the person who made it and ask how they did it.

It seems like you could carve both pieces(the head and body) from a 9 x 13 cake. A jelly roll would give more of a cylinder appearance, whereas this seems to be carved to shape. You just attach the head with a layer of buttercream, possible a skewer or dowel(or even drinking straws I have read some people use). The ears, tail, feet and bow are fondant. If you didn't want to use all fondant, you could just make the details fondant and the rest buttercream. MMF is really simple to make, the recipe is on the site. Only thing with MMF is that I never seem to use as much icing sugar as it calls for, just mix it in until its pliable but not extremely dry.

I hope some of this made sense, I feel like I'm rambling!

Hey I copied that cake one time! I think its in my gallery...mine isn't as cute as the one in the original pic but it worked.

I used two wonder mold pans. I cut off about 1/3 from the side of one of them to use as the head and attached with dowels after covering. I cut a bit off the second one to make it flat, put them together with icing, carved a bit off the sides, and then iced it all smooth with buttercream (you have some gaps to fill in) and I cut some of the tops off as well and shaped it.

I used rolled buttercream at the time but would probably use Marshmallow Fondant now and it tastes pretty good too! My problem with the way I did mine is I did not make the ears ahead of time to stand out nice like the one in the photo.

How did you manage to get the proper shape from using the wonderform pans? That kind of has me stumped, I've been trying to figure it out for two days.

Anyone else have any other ideas to help me out, I'd really really really appreciate it!!!!!

Haha not sure, might be easier just to take some round cake halves and set them on end and carve away the top a bit...or just carve it straight out from a large layer cake. Freeze first before cutting to give yourself more time and ease.

Here is how you could from a sheet cake, I said 9x13 but if you wanted him larger you could use a large sheet pan

Here is how you could using a wondermould pan, I don't know if this is how Kitagirl did it, but its an idea

Very rough drawings I know but hopefully this shows the jist.
You basically get a hunk of cake the height you need, and you carve away the pieces you don't want. Use buttercream and some form of a dowel, skewer or straw to anchor the head. You could also use the 3-D lamb pan, which has the basic shape of this if you don't want to carve. http://www.goldaskitchen.com/merchant.ihtml?id=46&pid=1446&step=4 If you can't find the lamb pan, a lot of the other 3-D pans would work too.

That is basically how I did the Eeyore using the Wonder molds although I cut less off of the right side and just filled in any gaps with extra icing. I also cut a bit off the top and sides, kinda curvy like a resting animal. Also I attached the head more to the front of the body than the top.

Ok, thanks everyone for the ideas! Everything has been really helpful so far. I like the idea of the 9x13, but it seems like it might be too short, should I just do a double layer or something?

Also another question....A girlfriend of mine would like a cake like this for her son's 2nd birthday, and she's asked me to make it if I am successful at the one for my daughter's birthday. She is willing to pay for it, she says she dosen't care what it costs, but what would be a fair price do you think? I don't want to cheat anyone, but I don't want to cheat myself either.

One other thing before I forget....I've heard of rolled buttercream, is it similar to fondant icing at all? I've heard that rolled fondant (especially the ready-bought) can taste kinda yucky, so I was thinking of rolled buttecream, but wasn't sure if I'd get the same effect.....what do you think?

Does anyone know where I can find a good rolled buttercream recipe? After some thought I figured maybe I'll attmept rolled buttercream rather than fondant (except using a small amount of fondant possibly covered in the buttercream for the decorations) Will that work? Can Anyone help me with this? I really want this cake to work out.....any advice available would be greatly appreciated.
