I am almost completed with all my requirements for my home bakery (just have to do my inspection...) and was wondering about insurance. Do any of you have insurance? I was wondering if we need it for not only if someone gets sick, but also what if someone falls down while at your house picking up a cake? Things like that. Does it apply to our type of business?

The Ag Dept or the NC Dept of Insurance might be able to answer that question for you. Check with Johnny Peele at the Ag Dept 919-733-7366 for starters. He is an inspector.

Talk to your home insurance agent and see what or who he recommends. Starting a home based business can render your regular home insurance coverage void if you do not inform your insurer of these changes. You will need extra liability coverage and need to look into other coverages. Your home insurer should be able to recommend the kinds of insurance you will need or send you to an insurer who covers these kinds of situations.
Your premiums just for regular fire insurance will go up somewhat because of the additional risk of fire due to the type of business you are in and your insurer will also want to make a home inspection.

Thanks! My inspector assigned to me is Sherron Batot. I have a Voicemail into her (with a big list of questions! haha) Never thought about asking her about insurance! Will do so!

loriemoms,

Squirrelycakes is right...if you declare all your intentions to your home insurance co. they will be able to carve out the right insurance for you so that you're not in a bind should you ever have to make a claim (HOPEFULLY NEVER).

Living in Texas we learned that this past year...business insurance doesn't cover flooding from a hurricane...you have to get special flood insurance - EVEN if you're not in a flood zone!! And, it takes longer than 30 days to get approved and to go into effect.
