I have my first wedding cake due this weekend...The colors are silver and burgandy...since the cake drum that I'm using is silver should I just leave it that way or should I cover it with white fondant to match the cake...or is it too late to cover the board with fondant.....

Hi .. Not sure if i understand your question?

From what I can surmise, you have a white and burgundy cake on a silver base? Sounds perfectly acceptible to me.

But maybe you could provide more details for us to go on.

Since the colours are Silver and Burgandy I think the Silver board would look just great!

O.K....sorry I wasn't too clear...I was wondering if the silver drum would look o.k. or if you think the board would look better if it was covered in fondant...The cake itself will be covered in white fondant and the flowers will be burgandy and silver....should the board be covered in fondant or left alone...TIA

I think it will look just fine on a silver drum.Fondant isn't cheap unless you have already charged the bride a good enough dollar!!

This is just a suggestion, not a criticism!

If I were making this cake, I would do one of two things, depending on the amount of color I wanted at the bottom of the cake for the balance of silver and burgundy:
1. cover the board with burgundy fondant. The way to conserve on the fondant is to apply water only around the outer i1 or 2 inches of the round, place a full circle of fondant on the board, and to then to cut away a circle from the center that is one inch smaller around than the cake to be set on it. Basically, making giant "O" on the board. You can use the reserved fondant for other decorations and have an exact match to the board. When you put down the cake, you can put some royal icing in the inside of the "O". I'd then apply silver ribbon around the edge of the drum.

2. leave the board silver and then apply burgundy ribbon around the edge of the drum.

thank you for the ideas..Rae..I think that I may try number 1, I'm just not sure if the burgandy will be too much, What do you think it would look like if the burgandy and white where marbled together, Do you think it would take away from the cake, I want it to have an elegant feel, The gumpaste flowers that I made are calli lillies and rosebuds. some of the calli lillies are white and some are burgandy and they all were coated with silver luster dust...

Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts....they are greatly appreciated.... icon_smile.gif

The marbeling could work nicely. I would think using more white than burgundy could give a nice effect. You could even paint on a bit of silver and it would look like real marble.

I recently marbled a board in blue and white and then gently pressed flower and leaf cutters into the fondant before it dried. The flowers and leaves mimicked the flowers and leaves used to decorate the cake. I then cut out a few leaves in solid blue and applied them to the board on the leaf indentations. It carried the colors and theme from top to bottom.

I try daily to post photos, but I have dial-up and only 1 try in 50 works--and then usually twice icon_confused.gif so I hope this makes sense.

I'm sure it will be lovely, whatever you choose. I hope we'll see photos of the finished product, too.

Its too late to help you but for the future if their colors are burgandy and silver. The silver base is a good way to bring the silver since frosting is hard to do in silver except w/ silver lustre. I am anxious to see the finished product.

That makes it all worth while and usually means more than the monetary pay we may get!
