Hi I think the easiest way of getting a true gold is to use gold luster dust & paint it on. We have luster dust available in Canada. Be sure to post your cake, would love to see what you come up with. Bunny

YOu can find luster dusts at sights such as www.candylandcrafts.com, I'm not sure what the shipping would be like to Canada. If I were you I'd do a search for luster dusts on Canadian cake sights. In the states the little tiny containers (2-3 grams?) run about $3-4, but you mix it with anything with at least that is at least 60 proof (alcohol) so that it will dry quickly and it really goes a long way. It comes in lots of colors and it really can look like gilding. Good luck!

Thanks for the info I will search for this product tomorrow morning.

I heard two things today about golden icing with Wilton product, I would like to know if somebody tried that:

mix orange with leaf green to obtain golden

or

mix yellow with blue to obtain golden

Is it ok ???

Thanks a lot for the help icon_smile.gif

hi,
just for the yellow and blue mixing you defenetly don't get golden you get green.
orange and green. maybe it would give a shade of brown. havn't tried that really but logically it would turn brownish. just put more orange and start slowly adding green. Still i don't think it would be the golden you are looking for.

Check out McCall's website (located in Toronto) and they might have it available to order. There is also Golda's kitchen, and Creative cutters, all Canadian. Cake Central also has Americolor availble in gold (I have not tried mine yet), shipping took about 10 business days.

I know I can get 24 k gold dust here in Ottawa at Artistic cake design.

Hi,
I just did a golden wedding cake in December. You can see it in my photos, if you would like to.
I covered the cake in ivory (mixed with a dash of golden yellow) coloured fondant, and then did all the accents and detailing with gold lustre dust mixed with a little vodka. I could post a close-up if you like.
All the best,
Karen

Hi,
Just posted the close-up of the sugar vase topper in my photos. The file is quite large, so may take some time to load.
Good luck!

I might be wrong about this but the Michael's here in the US only carry Wilton produce. I bought what I thought was luster dust but it was Shimmer dust. It came in a three pack of gold, silver, and pearl. Hopefully what you can get is the right stuff. I didn't realize it wasn't the right kind of stuff so when I mixed it with vanilla extract all I got was a big blob of goooo icon_cry.gif . I guess the shimmer dust isn't made to mix with alcohol. Anyhow I just wanted to mention that in case the Michael's in Canada sells the shimmer dust and you are mixing it up with luster dust. I was glad I bought it to experiment with instead of for an cake for someone. I still can not find luster dust here locally but it is available online.
