How Familiar are you with working with Fondant? If you are good with it, then it might be an easy way to go. If you prefer buttercream types of icing, then you could always pipe the pieces on.

How about sculpting a few pieces, from one cake? Like cut one cake into puzzle like pieces. It'd be time consuming, but if he's worth it...

my idea on the jigsaw puzzel Ok my idea is that if you can find a picture of your husband like when he was younger or something funny of him or a good memory. Something you guys will enjoy to have on the cake and have that picture turned into an edible image with the jigsaw puzzles designed on it (like the 1st example I put here, I got off the net). And if you can I dont know if this can be done put it on a sheet of fondant and cut it out with a really sharp knife to get the edges right with some height (like the 2nd example I put here) and put those pieces on top of a covered cake either it is fondant or buttercream. so it can look like real jigsaw puzzel pieces on top.
Well thats my idea I hope it helps.

editied: sorry i had tried to add an attachment of some picture but it did not work don't know why..

How about this, kinda like Cakeman suggested:

Or take a look in the gallery for an awesome Rubik's Cube made by edencakes. That's a puzzle too, right? icon_lol.gif

Another way might be to outline the pieces of the puzzle in one color piping and fill in the pieces with your cake colors, it would be similar to a quilting design, but with the puzzle piece shapes...if that makes sense! Janice

depending upon the size of the puzzle you want to make.....

if there is a teacher supply store near you, they should have blank puzzels for sale which you could use as:

1) a template for marking the top of the cake (piped pieces)...just press them into your crusted BC to leave an easy to follow imprint

2) a template for make the pieces out of fondant...lay on top and trace around w/ sharp knife.

in either case the max size of the puzzle will be no more than 8x10 if left in a solid piece...however if you break the pieces apart then could scatter all over the cake.

thank you for the reply and idea. frankly, i'm a newbie. but i love working with both fondant and buttercream. i think it makes sense to me if i just cut the cake into pieces, then cover with fondant, and work the image from there. makes sense to you?
