I have minimal skills and I need an idea for a baby shower, and when I work with numerous colors, I don't work well. Any ideas for something simple? I did look at Wiltons ideas already.
Any ideas? (pictures preferred) Sadly, I have no clue what the baby is going to be (although my first guess is human.).

Thanks!
Mixee.

..here's hoping that your first guess is right!

Have you looked at the cakes in the gallery here? There are some really cute ones!

You could try making a cake shaped like a baby carriage. These are cute and easy to put together. It also really only needs to be in two colors. Pink and white, blue and white or, if you don't know, maybe yellow and white.

You know what, I hadn't checked the gallery, and I thought of it right after I posted and went to check them out.
I think I decided to try something with baby blocks, maybe a buttercream transfer...anyone know where I can get a good baby block picture for an idea or especially a clear outline for a transfer?

I like to use google images to look for pics. I searched baby blocks and some came up.

I really like this one. It's a cake topper so if you wanted something really simple you could purchase it to put on top of the cake.

Here's simple and I am sure you can make it pretty...
Make a rectangle sheet cake, make it look like a quilt on the top by dividing the top into squares, leave the middle open for wording, and then instead of piping designs into the squares, use colored sugar and put it into the squares, and separate the squares with icing. See below..

Mouse, I tried one like that...modeled after Wilton's. I failed...miserably. icon_cry.gif I was looking for something a bit simpler until I can perfect my quilt making skills.

Thanks for the ideas!

I am also new at cake decorating and have to do a baby shower cake this weekend. i found a very simple but elegant and sweet looking cake on the Martha Stewart Living website. It has bands of icing around the outside and a single rose in the middle. I am going to ice the cake with either pink or blue and the do the bands and rose in the opposite color. Just an idea that I thought might help you.

Did you fail at the piped designs that you put on? This one has no designs, just colored sugar and straight lines.
Are you good at making stars? Take a sheet cake, ice it in green or yellow and put the letters A, B, and C and the numbers 1, 2, 3 on it.

Are you good at free-hand? You could ice a cake white and use stars to put a yellow duck in the middle with blue and white bubbles all around. I think it's sweet to write "welcome baby" on baby shower cakes too.....

someone posted this site for an idea for a lingerie cake, but I was looking at all the cool cakes on the site, and I saw some cupcakes under mini cakes/cupcakes that would be perfect for a baby shower and seemingly easy for a beginner!! check it out!

You can make a rectangle cake and add two storks facing each other with one carrying a baby with a blue diaper and the other pink diaper. Below you can write something like Heaven Sent. And add question marks around the entire design.. good luck.
I have a baby shower cake to do Sunday for a baby girl.. thinking about doing the baby under the blanket.. I love baby showers!

Husband sprung on me this afternoon a baby shower for tomorrow. This is what I came up with for that one. It was obviously last minute and If I did this one again, I would definately add a colored border. The white border does nothing for the cake, but a colored one would have made it pop. Ah well, there is always next time.

It is not so bad for only my 6th cake, though. Any other ideas on how I could elaborate on it? (I still have to make the other cake that I originally posted about.) Unfortunately, when left to my own devices I am blank.

mixee...I think that is wonderful especially for a last minute cake and only your sixth! If you wanted to add more color to the border, you could add some cute little dots to it in the same colors used for the baby blocks.

Thanks...I was also thinking (if I thought out placement) maybe some small drop or swirl flowers too.

Oh, the little trinkets are made of fondant...the blocks spell out BABY and then there is a bottle and a rattle.

Nah, I like to play with fondant (plastic isn't that easy to manipulate) icon_lol.gif ...LOL...but thanks! I tried to get a close up picture of them...but they came out blurry. Ah well, time to get a better camera, I suppose.

Well Good Night...I am way open to more ideas if anyone has them...keep posting. Oh and Lisa, your cakes are awesome, I especially like the scrabble board...you are really good with borders. (An area I need to work on) How did you do the board part of the scrabble game? Do you have a edible ink printer?

Thanks again,
Mixee

VERY CUTE!!! I think it looks excellent. I think the drop flowers might add too much but I like the idea of adding dots to the border! Excellent job!!! thumbs_up.gif

Yes...I use a Canon i350. Thanks for the compliments. Borders is an area I still need to work on too. Can't seem to master reverse shell.

That looks great....did you post it in the galleries too? I had a link that did cake blocks...I will add it just in case someone else would like it.

No, I haven't gotten into the whole gallery thing yet...I will look into that later. I wanted to do the blocks, but I couldn't find pans for it...so I tried baking a cake and then cutting out smaller blocks with cookie cutters (to put on top of a cake) but they were so 'crumby' that I couldn't put buttercream on them (I was going to cover them in fondant for a smooth look).

Lisa: I hate the reverse shell icon_confused.gif ...just for the record. I will just have to stick to my standard shell border until I get creative enough to try something else. You still didn't reveal how you did the top of the scrabble board, though... are you avoiding that question? icon_wink.gif

I am actually on my 2nd Wilton Course right now. So there is still alot to learn.

Mixee I think you did a great job!! Your big blocks look great and the colors are very nice. I wouldn't add flowers to it at all. Maybe do one border in yellow and the other in blue to add a little more color. I'll keep this in mind for when I need a new baby shower idea. Good work!! Just think how you can vary this one for your next baby shower cake.

Mixaleena I like what you did with that cake, use the same cake for the next shower but use a different colors for the top and bottom shells.

I think I might do that...but I don't think I will do a square again, I don't know.
What does everyone here use to transport their cakes? As in box ideas? I made a 'wedding' cake for a couple friends that was approx 8" high and had to buy a 12 x 12 x 12" box from Office Depot and wrap it...anyone know of a thread on this topic or should we start a new one?

Look around in the General Forum and also the How Do I? forum. This has been brought up before. Also when in the forums clikc on Search under the forums title and do a search under box and see what it pulls up.
