maybe when you're the next collette and winning major competitions, they'll stop telling you you're too young. there's no such thing, if you enjoy it who cares? i've also done cross-stitching since i was a kid - now if you're not "too young" for that when you're a teenager, well decorating cakes at 24 definitely isn't too young
Thanks for all of the nice comments. It makes me feel a lot better. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are all at different points in our lives. I'm married most of them are not, my husband works long hours and is our main income so I don't feel the need to be cut throat at work to get where I am going like they do, but I do need something to fill all of my alone time. They eat, breath and sleep microbiology/virology and I don't. Don't get me wrong I love love love microbiology/virology I just like to have something that take me away from the rest of the world for a while. Thanks again for your support, sometimes when I hear something over and over again I begin to wonder if I am wrong, buy you all have made feel better
I feel better too. I thought I was one of the youngest people on this site. I just turned 22 on the 2nd of January. I've been doing this cake thing going on a year now. Don't feel bad about what people are saying because ALL of my friends laughed at me when I told them what my hobby was until they saw my cakes. I'm far from being one of the best, but I'm doing something I love to do and it makes me happy to make others happy. So keep doing what you are doing. And your cakes look great!
I've been "decorating" since I was about 5 years old! I learned on my momma's hip.
I took lessons at age 18 and haven't stopped in the 19 years since.
The short answer is: NO, you are never too young (or too old, for that matter!)

That is ridiculous!! I'm 24 (25 tomorrow, but I'm not going to add even one day to my age , and I've tapped into decorate nearly 9 years ago and I loved it - still do! Don't let your co-workers get you down. When it comes to other things, my sisters always tell me to do more "age-appropriate" things, but who's to say what is "age-appropriate"? Do what make your heart happy, and you'll be happy!
(P.S. For Christmas I had my 1.5-year-old niece help me fill and frost my Christmas cake and she LOVED it. So, you can never be too young!)
I agree with the others..sounds like somebodies are jealous about your talent.
I saw my first Wilton Yearbook in 1980...was just floored by the craft. It took me 25 years to finally get up the nerve to sign up at Michaels.
My 14 year old dd took the three Wilton classes with me last year. She not only kept up with the teacher but her final cakes were better than the other ladies in the class. Some of whom worked at a local gaming casino...decorating cakes!
So much for being too young.
Next week she is holding a workshop at our house to teach a group of six kids ( ages 10- 13) how to decorate cakes. She just loves it and I'm so glad she didn't wait to tap into this awesome hobby.
More power to you and don't let those stick inthe muds change how you feel about what you are doing in your spare time.

hi! I married at 19. Had my first baby at 20. The first cake I decorated was when I was 21 (her first birthday cake). Since then I've just been making cakes and having kids!!! hahaha. (had another girl at 22 and another at 24). I am now 26, and even though most days I feel 35 I will still keep decorating cakes! As far as the kids go.... I think i will wait a little while on that (3 girls in 3.5 years is enough for now!)
off topic but,

Heehee, you sound like me, married at 20, first child at 21, first cake for her 1st birthday.
However kiddo, I would kill to feel like 35 again, haha! Hhmn, even 45!

Hi ayost43
I think its terrible that people are telling you that. Years ago in my 20's I was trying to do cakes, but was basically laughed at by some family and once I donated a cake to a bake sale for church only to find out later that they thought it was to decorated for there sale and hid it under the table. So I just gave up. DON'T let anyone do that to you. Now that I'm in my uumm well older, hehe, I'm doing cakes again and have had no one discourage me. Stick to your guns, do what you enjoy. I'm trying to get my nephew into doing cakes or baking anyway and he's only 9.

I started when I was your age so add 30 years to that I'm sorry it took me until know to really do any thing about it. I didn't start wedding cakes until about 5 yrs ago and know I'm trying to starti a business with it. If you love doing cakes make it a career and have fun with it. My daughter is following in my foot steps and I'm proud of her for doing so.
I use to get out the tips and play when I was younger. I have no idea how old I was when I did my first cake. I took Wilton Course 1 in 2000 (which is when the obsession began), and May of this year will make 2 years for me teaching the classes. I'm currently 27.
As everyone said I don't think there is an age limit for cake decorating. I have had several teens in my classes and am currently teaching a 17 year old that wants to do wedding cakes.
Oh heck no! I saw the title and thought maybe you were around 13! Look at Cakeman, his 9 year old niece. Never too young--or too old--to do what feels right to you. Your cake is terrific, keep going!
Hi, I'm 28 and am learning how to decorate from my mom(cakesondemand) after watching her do cakes for awhile now. I see how much she enjoys it. I love it too. My 9 year old daughter asked if she could design some cakes for us to make(she loves to draw). I told her great idea and asked her if she would like to make one of her designs and she loved that idea. you can never be to young. by the way, i love this site. i'm addicted.
Hi,
If you're to young at 24, then I guess I'm to old at almost 50
Don't stop doing what you love to do because of what people say.
I've been decorating for the past two years and love it to death

Heehee, watch it kiddo, you are treading on thin ice, haha!

ddog ... I know what you mean about feeling 35 when your 24! I had three kids in 22 months! Twins at 20 and another at 22 ... I'm 24 now and just started making cakes. I don't think you can ever be too young to do things you enjoy.
I don't think age has anything to do with it, my granddaughter is 14 and is taking the wilton class on course 2 and is doing great. It is all in if you like it and what you want to do.
I AM 14 YEARS OLD. I'VE BEEN DECORATING FOR SLIGHTLY OVER A YEAR. MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I DIDN'T START EARLIER. IT'S SO FUN!!!
I was 16 when I started decorating cakes. I'm 26 now and still going. I have 2 daughters and as soon as they can control that icing bag they're gonna start! lol...how do you think we're gonna pay for college! They have already done 3 cakes between the two of them (ages 6 and 5). Granted they were cakes only a mother could love... but they have the bug!
I'm only 26 and I love this hobby...so don't feel like you should stop because people are bothering you about it! They are just jealous because they can't do it!
wow ...........my mom always says you need to stop baking its soooo fustrating ....
IM LIKE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it so relaxing to me it challeges me and my brain in so many levels....I consider it a form of art. If you like it thats all that matters.......
lastingmoments : my mother is like that too! but as long as i clean up my messes (my dad helps ) she doesn't bug me about it too much.
My son is 7 years old and is into baking and decorating cakes. He started with dusting my pans at the age of 3. Since then we have made many cakes for fun. He decorated a cake for his friend, see the photo of the kite cake in my photos. He is going to make a cake for his dad this valentine.
Mother and son have a dream, to have a cake shop of our own.
I dont think age or gender has anything to do with baking cakes. Just do what you want and give it your best.
