Sorry to rant to everyone, but people keep getting on my nerves lately. They keep telling me I'm wasting my time decorating cakes and that I am too young (I'm 24) to be having a hobby like this. That I should join an adults sports team or something more age appropriate. Well I've been there done that. All I did in high school and college was play sports. I just wanted to do something different. For most of my life as a child my mom decorated cakes so I figured why not give it a try. Its not like I talk about it all the time or even discuss it with people I just do my own thing. I've just made a couple cakes for baby showers and bridal showers at work and now my coworkers are trying to rain on my parade. Sorry to take up your time it's just really driving me up the wall lately and I knew I could say something here without be put down.

Im 27, have been doing it for two years and no one has ever said to me Im too young!! Cake decorating is a creative outlet, develop your own style, have fun with it and who cares what other people say, as long as you are enjoying yourself!

How can it be a waste of time if it's something you enjoy doing? Tell those people to mind their own business!! Sounds like they have nothing better to do than bad mouth people, maybe they need a hobby of their own... tell them to keep their mouths shut and find something else to keep themselves occupied!!! It's none of their business, and don't let it affect you...

No one is "too young" to decorate cakes. That's just crazy. Don't listen to those people. It's very artistic and relaxing. Nothing wrong with that.

Honey, I checked out your cake, I loved it. I think you should do what YOU enjoy doing and not what everyone else thinks you should be doing. I would much rather a daughter of mine be decorating cakes than out running around. Besides with enough practice, maybe you will be able to make a living at this someday. It sure looks like you have the potential. I'm proud of you for wanting to be YOU. Hope to see LOTS more cakes in your photos!

There is no such thing as being too young to decorate. If it makes you feel any better I've only just turned 22 last Dec. and I've been dabbling in this thing since I was about 14. I'm not a pro by a long shot but I find the entire process fun. Different strokes for different folks is my motto and if it appeals to you don't let anybody change your mind. Plus there is no feeling in this world like the pride you feel when someone appreciates your handiwork and tell you how good it tastes. Don't give up yet. Please yourself.. to hell with them.

I'm about to turn 25 and I've been doing this since last year. Everyone loves it! If they think you're too young to be decorating cakes then I would hate to know what they'd think about me. My other hobbies include cooking and crocheting.

Also, the last time I checked there wasn't a beginning or ending age limit placed on Cake Decorating. I think it's just silly that they told you that! At age 24 you can vote, drink, drive a car, get married and have children but don't think about cake decorating cuz you are just too young. Give me a break. When are people going to stop with the age thing???

To young??? So then am I to old?? Age has nothing to do with having a hobbie you enjoy. My daughter is 10 and loves to decorate with me. It's just FUN. By the way I LOVE your cake I added it to my favorites

Remember everyone has an opinion, and it doesn't have to agree with yours.

Obviously you dont need to worry about making a cake for any of them. (but dont be surprised, or grumpy when they ask )

You are kidding right ? My 5 year old granddaughter is already decorating cakes. She is not bad. She decorated a cake for her Daddy's birthday all by herself. I baked and she decorated. People that put conditions on a talent or a dream of someone else often are envious because they can't do it theirself. You go girl and decorate all you want.

too young...that is crazy! I am 25 and have been doing cakes for a year for family and co workers. I grew up watching my mom make wedding cakes and she would teach me things like the star tip and borders and I loved it. no way can you be too young. I wish I would have started cakes a long time ago...I am having so much fun! the way i see it the more practice the better, so start early! If you like it keep it up!

I am only 20, will be 21 in May, and no one has EVER said I was too young. As a matter of fact, my grandfather is wanting me to put together samples to take around and see if I can go ahead and get customers for when I open my shop! Do what you want ... you are grown, and if you enjoy it, by God do it!!

I just turned 24 in November, no one will be telling me I am too young to decorate cakes! My sister is on a woman's baseball team, she got all the athletic ability, I got all the cooking/baking skills! If someone told me to join a sports team instead I would probably keel over laughing. People will always have an opinion on your life, you just say thank you but I like what I am doing.

When I got married in June, I had everyone and their brother and mother's brother giving me "advice". I didn't have any bridesmaids, but a male friend as a "bridesman", the best "man" was my husband's sister. I wore white slip on sneakers with lace shoelaces. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who thought this was nuts! ("well why don't you have his sister on your side, and your friend on his side"..."well why don't you wear heels for the ceremony and then change into the sneakers after?") This is 2006, there is no set rules as to what one "should" be doing! (weddings or hobby wise!)

The way I see it, this is your life, you are an adult, you know what you want to do. To nuts with them! Maybe they should get more "age" appropriate tact skills and not be telling a co-worker what she should be doing with her life.

These people telling you that you are too young are probably just jealous. Are these people around your age? I consider cake decorating an art form. Most composers of music and artists didn't learn their talent later in life. It was always there and evident early in their lives. My sons who just turned 7 & 8 love to dabble. They just did a cake last week. You just keep making cakes. Do what you love. I bet they don't mind eating your cakes.

Last I remember, you take up Hobbies because it's something that you
enjoy! If you like decorating cakes, then that is what you do! (I looked at your gallery by the way, and you obviously have a knack for it!)
So don't let anyone tell you that your too young. I personally wasn't aware that cake decorating was age related in any way!

I am 44 and guess what I have done... I have been a Marine, potter, painter, sold insurance, worked for a dentist, worked in a factory, parachuted, now a stay at home Mom. TO Me life is just one big long journey. Tell that to the nay sayers. I just get turned on by it all and I try it. If you would look at me you would never guess it.. just part of the surprising people. Can't tell a book by it's cover or hobbies/ careers. Oh yeah my husband is a mechanical engineer and he was an avid hang glider. You co-workers are just SO jealous... I saw your photos.

I took my 9 y.o. (at the time) Niece with me when I took my first Wilton course and people questioned if she was too young to do that sort of thing. Half the people in the class dropped out, because of whatever reasons, but my niece stuck with it. She even had one woman tell her she wished she could decorate that good.

It sounds like a bit of jealousy, but it also sounds like they think they are too cool or too "good" to do that sort of thing. Wait until they need a cake for soem special occasion and you are who they think of. Then you can tell them you are too cool to make a cake for losers who critisize your "love".

You're never too young to do anything. I've seen plenty of 10 year olds going to college already. 24 is not too young to anything but rent a car ;o)

Sometimes when others aren't fulfilled in their lives, they don't want to see anyone else be. Don't let anyone else tell you what is going to make you happy. Listen to yourself and go with your heart! Okay, there coworkers so you have to deal with them at work, but find some others in your area that share the same interest as you and they'll be there to support you 100%! Ofcourse we are too!

I have to agree with everyone else here...it's a HOBBY, it's what makes you feel good about yourself and probably is a stress reliever for you (like me).

In fact, I remember seeing a picture posted the other day (sorry, can't remember who) who said that the drop flowers were done by her daughter who's only 3!!

Just 'cuz it's not a "trendy" hobby doesn't mean you can't get into it...cake decorating has been around long before you and I were around and will be long after you and I are gone...Keep on piping!!

I am a Wilton instructor and have taught kids 10, 11 and 12 before. I taught one young girl last year (I believe she was 13) that knew she wanted to be a pastry chef and already had a business plan put together and everything. She had a relative that had a commercial kitchen that she operated out of and had clients and everything!!!!! You're never too young (or too old) to do something you enjoy. Tell all those people to shut-up - they're just jealous!!!

I started selling my cakes at age 13!!! (did my first large wedding cake at age 1I've got 7 yrs under my belt which makes me 20 now....and i dont think IM TOO YOUNG to sell cakes. LMAO...*rolls eyes at whoever told you that*

Your interests are what make "you"! If we all liked the same things at the same ages, it would get pretty dull. I am pretty certain they will start thinking you are just the right age when they need wedding cakes, birthday cakes, baby shower cakes. Geesh.
Is a six year old child prodigy violinist too young or just extremely gifted and interested in what he does?

Too young never too young to enjoy something that you do. My daughter is 13 and loves to do cakes with me rather than go somewhere. I think sometimes people are just jealous that you have another interest and are good at it. Keep at what you like to do and don't let people get you down about it. Just don't take them any cake to eat lol

HECK NO you are not TO YOUNG! I am teaching my first student to decorate cakes...SHE is pretty dang good too. HER AGE...11

maybe when you're the next collette and winning major competitions, they'll stop telling you you're too young. there's no such thing, if you enjoy it who cares? i've also done cross-stitching since i was a kid - now if you're not "too young" for that when you're a teenager, well decorating cakes at 24 definitely isn't too young
