I used the sports ball pan for the first time this weekend to make a teapot cake & I had some trouble icing to the bottom of it because of the way it was sittign on the serving tray. I ended up hiding it with a fondant rope border because I was so unhappy with it! I was wondering if anyone has a tip for me on how to ice the bottom next time I try the pan out (especially if I use it to make a ball - I don't think a rope border would go with that type of cake to hide the mess!!)
Sorry - I will add a picture of it to my photos - tried an attachment but it didn't work.
When I used the sports ball pan and had to cover it with a zillion stars, I held the bottom, flat side on my hand, covered it about half way with stars and then placed it on the cake, put my filling in the middle then put on the top and finished decorating. Your tea party is very cute!
Swoboda - cute idea! I make the teapot cakes all the time. (one of them is in my pics) what I do is trim off the bottom of one of the sections that is going to be the bottom of the teapot. I save that piece and use it to make the topper! That way it sets just fine. I use a star tip to trim around the bottom of the teapot - and it makes it look like it is just a part of the pot.
You could put the ball together then hold it upside down in one hand and ice the bottom flat with the same color you plan to use....then put it down on the board. That way you can't see as much if you miss a spot.
Now why didn't I think of holding it upside down to cover the bottom first.... So simple yet it didn't even dawn on me!! Thanks a lot for the idea. I'm sure it will be a lot easier this way next time.
