I have taken Wilton classes 1, 2 & 3, which are offered at Michael's & Hobby Lobby stores... maybe other places too, not sure. I am glad I took them, learned a lot since I was a complete novice.

Yes, I think this is the 2nd investment I've made and I enjoyed all 3 courses + the Fondant & Gumpaste class as well.

I really liked the classes I took, it was the Wiltons I II III at our joanns store ... I was really sad when they ended but haven't been able to afford any more classes ... BUT I will say this ... I have learned allllll my cake decorating tips from here .. my classes were fun, and I learned exactly what was in their books, but the tips, and advice, and creativity, it all comes from this site right here!

Took a very basic course out of boredom years and years ago, learnt how to fill a bag and pipe very simple things, sort of like a shortened Wilton one course I suppose. Everything else is self taught

I had to teach myself most of what I do because I live over an hour from a Michaels or an AC MooreI and I've learned the most from CC. But I did take a gumpaste flower class a few months back that was great...just to be around others who love cake decorating!

I too live an hour away from the nearest classes. I was introduced to cake dec'ing by gramma, then learned basics in Home Ec. in high school. CC has taught me more than anywhere, though!

I am in the midst of Wilton Course 2. I am polishing the skills I learned from watching my mother decorate many cakes. I really like the fellowship of people that have the same interest as I do! My courses at HL are $12.50!

I am going to take the fondant and gumpaste class through Joann's in May - I can't wait. I think it is going to be like 18.00 plus the kit and manual.

I've taken Wilton course 1. I'm looking forward to course 2&3. I am pretty much self taught...and it shows! I do learn something new every day on this website, which is awesome.

Also...usually if you buy the course kit, you'll get the course for free. The kit for course one was 15.00, I think at Michaels.

Good Luck!

When I was looking for classes, I checked out several places:

1. Culinary Schools and colleges-
You usually must enroll in an entire program at these places, but occasionally they offer individual classes.

2. Cooking Class businesses
There are a few businesses here that offer individual cooking courses to the public. The courses I found were usually a few 3 or 4 hour sessions. They are more expensive, but usually include the ingredients, tools, etc.

3. Cake decorating supply stores
My local store offers a 10-week program (once a week) for $90.

4. Michael's- The Wilton Courses- inexpensive, accessible, widely known

When you look into classes, be sure to ask if the cost includes tools or if you will need to bring your own. Also ask if you will need to bring icing and/or cake each week.

I like the Wilton Courses I'm taking, but they are very structured and I like to go crazy and experiment a lot. I'd also like to take a class that focuses on making the cakes & fillings (someday)...

i took all 3 wilton classes 2 yrs ago but had already been decorating for 15+ yrs. I am left handed so the class was helpful in learning the "correct" way to hold the bags and the motions.

Ive been watching my Mom decorate cakes since I was six years old and she took the Wilton courses. Over the years, she worked in several gourmet bakeries and restaraunts and has always honed her skills. All I've ever had to do as far as birthdays, was create the idea and she created the cake. BOY did I have it made or what? One year ago this month, her biggest fan and the love of her life, my Daddy passed away. She decorated her last cake the week before to his applause and picture taking. She hasnt been able to do it since. So I just stepped in and took over and made the cake she had agreed to for church. Its the NARNIA cake in my pictures. I was really impressed that I had picked up all these techniques over the past 26 years watching her. Well, that and decorating ,Christmas and Valentine Cookies and the occasional BUNNY cake. So, after that, I found myself baking more and more. Trying out recipes, and then I found CCentral and all these new techniques. I still go to Moms to decorate. She loves watching me now and seeing me when I flip over those FBCTs and come up with a new cake idea. Shes my biggest fan and best friend. And I just wanted to take a moment to publically thank her for being the best Mother, Teacher, and Friend that I could ever have. Love you Mama

I started by taking a cake decorating class in culinary school as an elective. We learned more baking and plating techniques, so it made me want to learn more about actually putting a cake together. I read everything I could find and practiced at home. I just completed the wilton courses, they were a lot of fun, and I learned a lot.
