Ok, I am ready to buy a printer and the kit to make ediable images (I have an cannon printer, but I have had it for years and do not trust that I can clean it completely, so want to start new). Who do y'all recommend?

My husband and son got me a Cannon iP6000D printer for Christmas. I used it yesterday for the first time to make a cake and cookies for a birthday party last night. It worked great! It was actually more printer than I asked for but i'm not complaining!

I'm going to post the pics from the party now.....

I see a company Icing Images has a Cannon HP1500 system for just 175 bucks. (I already have a scanner). This price is the best I have seen! Anyone have any experience with them?

I do love my Cannon printer..I got an epson free with my PC and it is sitting in the closet....I rather use my Cannon! haha

The iP1500 is a great choice and it'll be less expensive if you buy one new from an electronics or office supply shop or eBay. You can find them new for about $50 (try a Froogle search) and even less on eBay. The cost of supplies for that printer will be about $75 so total about $125 for the new printer, ink, frosting sheets and cleaning cartridges.

Thats a great idea, can I just buy a new printer and use it for printing transfers? Do I have to clean it first with anything special or use the cleaning carts?

It's not a bad idea to clean even a new printer first or just printing a test page (any picture) with your edible inks onto regular paper would also flush it out.

I LOVE my Cannon ip3000. I found it at Circuit City on sale with a rebate and it was very affordable. I don't know what I did without it. I have never had problems of any kind (knock on wood icon_confused.gif )

I think I remember that sale...middle of last year? They were only $70 or $80 if I remember right.

I have found the IP1600 for 50 bucks at Circuit City (they don't seem to make the 3000,4000 or 5000 anymore) I have been able to find ink at various places..who do you all go to for your ink?

I have the Canon 6000d also. Love it!! Because it has 6 cartridges you get better color separation, which makes for better pictures. I used it yesterday on a really old picture that also had to be enlarged. It did a really good job!! I bought mine on eBay!!

I am also considering a 6000d as well...(I found it on Amazon for about 125.00. I am still though confused about where to buy the ink, as everyone says their is the best! (one company even says you never have to clean the printer?!?) I know with real ink jet printers, the cartridges that are cheap can leak and have all kinds of problems. is this true with the edible inks or are they all basically the same? Does everyone just order from kopykake?

The 6000D will require you to use 6 cartridges ( 2 are photo cartridges) but only 4 of them are used to print edible images. You don't print edible images at photo quality. It'll be less expensive to buy and maintain a 4 cartridge system. There won't be a noticable difference in quality.

As far as the edible inks and frosting sheets go, I use Kopykake and love them but Lucks brand are great too. Inks clogging is common to all inkjet printers and not just those used for edible imaging. It's more about proper maintenance than it is about the actual ink used.

The 1600 isn't compatible with edible ink cartridges yet so you can't use it to make edible images. You can still find discontinued models in stock at some electronics/office supply stores. Try a Froogle search. You can also find them new on eBay thumbs_up.gif

I get all of my edible image supplies from Icing Images.

As for clogging, proper maintenance is the key. However, should you have a problem, the nozzle check doesn't resolve it, you can remove the print head and clean it. Kopykake's website has a section giving instructions for doing this using one of those hand steamers (like Scunci or Shark). I did it, actually for my image printer and my regular printer). Fast and did the trick!!
