I was just wondering if there is a recipe for a chocolate crusting icing - can I just add cocoa or will that mess up the icing?

This is the one I use. But yes, you can just add cocoa to the Wilton buttercream recipe and it will work fine. If you want a really dark icing try Hershey's Special Dark Dutch Processed cocoa. The regular will work fine, it makes more of a milk chocolate color.

Hershey's "Especially Dark" Chocolate Frosting
1/2 c (1 stick) butter or margarine
2/3 c Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa
3 c powdered sugar
1/3 c milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla. Makes about 2 cups.

Hope that helps!

You welcome! You can even use half regular and half dark cocoa if you want a darker color than milk chocolate but not quite the almost black color of that the all dark cocoa will give you.

Hope it works well for you.

You can add cocoa powder or melted chocolate to your buttercream (crisco/butter, liquid, flavor and powder sugar). You may need to up your liquid a little bit though. Other than that it should work out just fine.
