I've seen that several people have used this for their designs.. This may sound stupid on my end. But I was told to lay it on the cake and then you can fill in your design... My question is Can you eat rice paper and where can you get this from? I'm new to this and I'm clueless on this.. icon_surprised.gif

Ok... Can you use them though on your cakes? I was told to lay it on the cake and you can pipe your image out and fill in... I was concerned about them it comes time to eat it... Will it effect cutting the cake? I would like to learn more about this before diving in feet first....Thanks for the advice...

Before anyone runs out to thier neighbourhood Asian supply store.....

The rice paper that is used in confections is not the same as the rice paper used for spring rolls. The spring roll wrappers are very brittle and need to be softened in water before using. The rice paper we use for decorating is similar to vellum, a little transluscent (sp?), easily torn and can also be put through a printer just like regular paper.

I am not sure what type of work you are trying to do with this. Some people use a type of this with an edible image printer. Others airbrush designs on it while on the cake. Some people use edible markers on it, I have heard. I have also heard of people doing gel transfers on it. Basically the rice paper sort of meshes into the icing on your cake so yes, cuts easily.
Lisa, the moderator, may be able to help you. I think most people have to order it on-line.
The people you were talking to, what were they using on it to draw and fill in? Is there an example in the galleries where this was done?

Well it's too late for me .. I already ran out the door once I read LOCAL ASIAN GROCERY STORE ( It was pouring down rain and I put the twins in the car.. My husband too icon_lol.gif , and off we drove to the other side of town to purchase the hard brittle rice paper just as you said for spring rolls...
It was very hard ,I was able to put my design on it by putting a image under the rice paper and used a edible non toxic writing pen... It broke up when I went to trim it with a scissor... Lets just say that the cake turned out great but we won't be able to cut it easily... So I decided to just make it a conversation piece...This is my first cake since I took the beginners Wilton class over a year ago... I amazed at how great it came out.... I got the idea from Aitza, please go under her profile and see how wonderful her cakes are.. She is truly an artist... She gave me plenty of tips and ideas but I just didn't ask the right questions regarding the rice paper.. But I have spoken with her again and I was able to order what I needed from Sugarcraft.com... Now I just can't wait till I get those so I can try again and maybe be able to eat it this time.... Tripletmom and Squirrelly Cakes - I appreciate your later post... As you both can see I'm a total newbie - Thanks for the 101 on Rice Paper... I hope to post the cake tonight... If you have time please take a look at it and let me know what you think... There will be a rolling list of credits for sure..... Have a great day...

Hi Cassandra,
Her cakes are lovely. Now I think I understand what you are talking about. She is drawing on the rice paper, putting the rice paper on the cake and then filling in with the buttercream.
Not sure if you know about this other method. Another way of doing this without needing the rice paper, is to make a copy of your picture in reverse. Then you trace over all the details with clear piping gel or you can use a dark coloured piping gel. So you carefully place the paper with the piping gel, gel side down on the flat-iced smooth cake top. Remove the picture and the outlining will all be there in piping gel for you to use as a guideline to fill in with your coloured buttercream. You could then fill in all the area surrounding, using the star tip as she does or leave the background smooth around the image. So you will get the same effect but not need the rice paper.

Yes we actually used that method on the rainbow cake in the Wilton Course 1 .. I just thought her ideas were really neat and thought it would be nice to try.... I want to try the FBCT but haven't had a chance yet. Thanks for the tips though... Have a great day!

Hi Cassandra,
You are very welcome, just wasn't sure if you knew about that method and figured it wouldn't hurt mentioning it. Her work is very lovely indeed!
