o.k, i told a neighbor i'd do a last minute cake for her, she needs it tonight, by 7:30, it's now 1:00. for 12, femininie, pretty. any ideas! i'm in such a crunch, i can't think. also, i told her $20, i figured that was an o.k. price, expecially the last minuteness, also, is a 3" deep 8 inch round enough? i always tend to give more cake than needed, or should i do a 2" 2 layer 8 inch- i just like people to feel like they're really getting some cake. thanks

Ok...for 12 little girls....I'd do something with some fun colors...not too little girly. Like a bright pink and purple, lime green & aqua with a little orange or something like that. Make it a little funky/fun...swirls, polka dots on the sides, maybe. Some squiggles & hearts would be fun. I attached a pic of some petit fours that Inspired Occasions (bonnibakesAZ, member here at CC) has on her website. This is sort of what I was thinking and trying to describe above....

As for the amount of cake...will there be any adults that want some? If it's strictly for the girls, I would take one 8' layer, torte & fill it....that should be enough for just the girls. If there's going to be a few adults, then I'd bake 2 8' layers and stack with filling between. This is how I think: The thicker the layers of cake there are, and if there's filling in between, the smaller slice you can cut because they'll still be getting a good amount of cake (in height)....I know that's a crazy way to describe what I'm thinking...I hope you can make some sense of it. icon_razz.gificon_smile.gif

it's actually for adults (cute petit fours by the way) the woman is 40, soft spoken, very feminine. i'm thinking pink, roses, etc, but i want something different than what you can pick up at the local bakery, but something that can be done quick. thanks

I wouldnt have gone that low for a last minute cake. You're doing her a favor not the other way around. I think that should be enough cake though with 1 -8 in round torted. Good luck. You could always do drop fowers in pastel colors to get a simple/feminine look. There should be plenty of ideas on this site.

something like this would be nice. Its from the course 1 Wilton Class book. Maybe add various color drop flowers and leaves.

Oops...I'm sorry...don't know why I assumed it was for LITTLE girls...lol icon_lol.gif

You could go with pink & white or pink & ivory color scheme. Maybe swiss dots on the sides, or cornelli lace; bead or shell or reverse shell borders on top and bottom, some roses on the top?

Maybe a pretty pastel pink basketweave with some roses or drop flowers?

All lovely ideas, I would say for quick, the swiss dots and a few flower on top would go fast. Haha, well about the price....sorry, I find that really low too especially for a last minute cake, but that is me. Not meant as a critique, meant to encourage you to charge prices that are more in keeping with a custom cake kiddo!
Have fun and let us see what you did kiddo!

I saw a cake just a few days ago in a magazine and I thought it was beautiful. It was roughly frosted (not smoothed at all). It had a lot of texture. Then to make it pretty she had added the silver balls intermitently all over it. It was gorgeous, and seemed pretty simple to do. Other than that I would say maybe something like this.......?????

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

i'll take any input i can into pricing squirrelly, my husband is always tellinjg me i undercharge. i forget that not everyone CAN do this. i 've even been having customers (o.k. neighbors) tell me to charge more. i just worry that people won't use me if i'm too pricey. i'm stay at home mom to 4 and i love doing this- but i at least need to cover my costs and support my hobby icon_biggrin.gif

Here is one I do in about 20 minutes, rough iced, not smoothed but something along those lines is quick and still looks decorative.

Thanks for posting my picture Jenn, I feel honored!!!

I was going to say maybe a rough iced cake and then soem fresh flowers...LOL Those are so cute I think. I have seen a lot of them in the cake magazines from Europe.

Or what about a gift box or hat box style.. Something modern and funky like polka dots all over and then a ribbon up the sides and bow on top?

Have fun and you should definately charge more next time!!

Well, I am in Canada, so my prices will be a bit different from yours but here an eight inch cake in most bakeries would be about $25 up to $60 depending on the ingredients, likely one layer, possibly a 2 inch deep torted, with the three standard roses. I would do a minimum of three inches torted or four inches filled, for $30-$40 depending on the degree of difficulty and the ingredients in the cake and icing. My cakes are mostly from scratch, some are really doctored cake mixes using milk, sour cream, pudding, those kinds of things.
I charge $60 for a 10 inch round, $50 for a 9 inch and usually $40 for an eight inch.
Most folks charge at least $5-$10 more than a regular bakery cake, more if the decorations are elaborate or difficult or time-consuming. If it is more cake depth wise than the bakeries, even more and extra for filling.
