I have volunteered a cake for a fund raising auction at my son's school. I am going to either make something up with pictures or do a dummy cake to show at the auction and auction off a cake for a future date for the winner of the auction.
Any suggestions on what parameters to put on the cake to be made? I'm thinking I can list available flavors and fillings, servings or size of cake, # of colors, icing types, design? What do you think? I don't want to go overboard but don't want someone to expect a fondant wedding cake to serve 200+ either.

(Jackie - i think i figured it out!)
You should definitely set parameters. I'm doing something similar to this. At my current employer we are having a scavenger hunt in a couple of weeks and I volunteered my cakes as a free prize.
So, for my protection I created three cake vouchers that will allow the winners one 9" round cake. They can choose from cholocate or yellow cake and white or chocolate buttercream. I also list that I will do basic decorations such as flowers and borders and I will write any message on the cake. Also, I have a section on my voucher where the winner has to sign and date the voucher for free cake.
I think you are on the right track!
I am doing a similar thing next month. My daughters school is having a famly fun night and I am donating a cake for the cake walk and I am also doing a draw for a free childrens birthday cake. I am going to specify the flavors available and I am making a standard 1/4 sheet or 10 inch round double layered cake. Make sure you don't give the bank away
Thank you!
I was thinking a 2 layer 13" x 9" or 10" round or a single layer 11" x 15" in standard flavors with buttercream and basic decoration? I can also offer edible image or fondant for an additional charge or should I leave it basic?
Debbie
I think you should leave it basic especially since you are donated or auctioning off a free cake. We (cake decorators) use a lot of time in baking and decorating cakes. If the winner decides that want something more then you should discuss additional charges.
If you create a coupon, voucher, etc I would make sure it says that additional charges will apply for designs requested that are not included in the original offer. Or something like.
Thank you! I guess I shouldn't make it to confusing. To most of them it's probably just a cake. I guess I should specify "no character cakes" ?
