Is it possible to rent a comm. kitchen? How can I go about doing my business if I can't afford to open a complete bakery??

You may try to contact your local SBA to find kitchen incubators that host upcoming local businesses. You may also contact local community colleges that can guide you to one.

I asked a local caterer if I cuold use her commercial kitchen, and she rents it to me hourly.

I use a local church kitchen in their off hours for free. (Lots of churches build huge kitchens but only need them on the weekends). Some bakeries or caterers are willing to rent (who couldn't use a few extra dollars?), but it's hard to find someone to agree and sometimes they charge high rates (so do your research). I searched for a long time too, so you're not alone. It's tough, but well worth the time to save yourself the expense of owning your own bakery before you're ready (I estimate that I saved about $30,000 in rent this year alone!)! I printed an internet list of every church around me (hundreds in all) and just started calling them. On the last page, I found the one I'm in! It takes patience! I've also seen people take out "kitchen needed" ads in the classifieds (especially around the holidays), but I don't know if that works. Good luck!
