Hi,
Does anyone have an idea as to how I can do the look of the diamond impression mat if I don't have one?
TIA
Maybe you could lay a strip of something the width that you want to space them (another yardstick?). That would make it easier to keep straight.
I must tell you I tried lots of methods - none of them were satisfactory, no matter how meticulous I was. And it was MUCH too much work when the impression mat is so easy and inexpensive.
Good luck -

You can mark (ever so slightly) 1" intervals on the top of the cake and the bottom of the cake. Then take a ruler or the back of a long knife to indent the fondant? buttercream?.....use your marks as a guideline. Depending what shape you want the diamonds....slender or square-ish....
Put one end of your straightedge on one mark on the bottom of the cake and align it with your marker of choice on the top of the cake. You can count one over or two or even three. I'm sure this is not clear....I see it easily done but I can't explain it very well.
I waited too late to order the diamond impression mats for a fondant wedding cake I did a couple of weeks ago, so I just used a ruler and marked off one-inch increments along the top and bottom of the cakes, then I decided how much slant I wanted and connected the dots with the side of an offset spatula.
I was pleased with the results but it took way too long...I will be ordering mats in the next few days for some future orders I have.

I will be ordering one soon I just wanted to do one on a cake for this weekend. You know how it is when you just cant wait.
May I recommend getting the diamond impression cutter looking one? It's a metal press, looks like a cookie cutter. There are three diamonds in a row and you just go around. It's sooo much easier than the mat and trying to keep it where it needs to be.
cande - I saw them on sugarcraft.com. They are called quilting markers. They are on the same page as the impression mats. The only ones shown are double diamond, but next to those it tells you that others are available upon request (it then lists all the sizes). You just have to e-mail them with the size needed and delivery is about 10-15 days. They are more expensive than the diamond impression mat. I don't have one, I saw this when I was looking to buy an impression mat. I didn't know anything about them (the markers). I ordered the mat simply because I had seen it referred to so much on CC. I just received it (from cakesbysam) but, I haven't tried it yet. Let me know if you get the markers.
