Hi Everyone! I am really excited! I took my class taught by Wendy Kromer today (she is the cake designer who does all the wedding cakes for Martha Stewart Weddings). She lives in Ohio, so she was willing to teach a class in a cooking school in the area.
I must say, first of all, she is a very nice and down to earth person. She did not let making it big get to her. She is an excellent teacher, and very patient I really enjoyed her class. SHe taught us how to make Swiss meringue buttercream. YAY! I also showed her some of my cakes, and she was very positive about our work! I felt encouraged, to say the least!! She also had some excellent tips about how to make things easier, such as getting the fondant smooth and stacking the cakes.
I found out that she is really the main person responsible for bringing fondant into the US. She suggested to Martha Stewart to let her design some cakes with fondant, and Martha showcased them in her magazines. She was the first one, although its been done in England and Australia for much longer. So she is the old pro!!
Anyway, I did a cake the cooking school had prepared for us (the cake itself was slightly lopsided...oh well) under her direction. I decided to do a baby cake because I need it for my portfolio. It's very very simple, because we were short on time, but here is a picture. I also got a photo of myeslf with Wendy, but we can't post it. It will be on my website within the week, though!
Anyway, you can visit her website at: www.wendykromer.com.

You lucky, lucky girl. I wish there's a celebrity cake decorator that lives who gives classes around here. I am so jealous! Just curious though how much do you pay for the classes and what do they teach there? Can't seem to find that info on her website.
Good for you Ellen! Sounds like you really enjoyed it and your cake is great. I like her website, something different.
I am taking one with Colette Peters in June. The cost but I think it's worth it.
Lucky you we are all jealous, nice job on the cake, and we will be waiting for your pics. on your web site
Lovely job kiddo, good for you and lucky you too! How nice that her fame didn't make her egotistical!
Hugs Squirrelly
Awesome Ellen!
Now fess up , how much did the class cost, how long did it last and what secrets did you learn for making the fondant super smooth?
That's so cool that she was positive about your creations! You must be on cloud 9!! Congratulations!!
Well, the class was quite reasonable; about 185.00 for the entire day, including lunch. It was worth it, because now I have a pic to post on my website, and it should look good for my business to say that I had a class with Martha Stewart's cake designer. I also learned tons. She taught us a way to sort of start at the top with smoothing the fondant, working very fast, and smoothing it down. She helped me with crumb coating better to get a smoother look to the fondant, and just tons and tons of little answers to little problems too numerous to mention.
You must post with your Colette Class, Zamode...I'll be so curious!
Hmmmm...now I know who to blame for fondant!
Glad your class was all that you hoped for--it's always great to learn a few new tricks. I'm sure your investment will pay off! Sounds like it was fun!
I didn't realise she is based in Sandusky. You know that cake on the cover of MS Weddings with the pastel colored candy sticks? Everytime I saw that cake it made me think of Cedar Point for some reason. (Maybe their salt water taffy stand? even though it doesn't come in those sticks...) Now it makes a little more sense.
