Does anyone know how to get a sheen to buttercream to make silver. I was just going to use different shades of gray for a space themed buttercream transfer. But, if there is something I can add to give it a spark it might be even cooler!!! I have to do it this weekend so I hope the ideas are something I can get at wal-mart or michaels! thanks!

I am really not sure if there is a good way to get your icing silver. The only way I can think of would be to use silver luster dust on your butter cream.
Can I get luster dust at Michael's, do you know? Is luster dust something I add to the icing when I mix the color or do I sprinkle it on like before I ice on the wax paper for the BCT?
Suzanna
You would have to order Luster dust online or check ebay. You have to paint it on, so you would have to wait till your buttercream crusts. I have not used it on buttercream but I know others have. Maybe someone can be of more help.
Wilton carries a similar product now. It is not as "fine" as the luster dust but works. Just dip a small brush in the container and then flick the bristles in the direction of the cake.
Michael's sells something called Elegant Shimmer Dust...comes in a pkg of 3 Silver, Gold and Pearl. It costs about 4 dollars or something to that effect. I don't know what the difference is between that and Luster Dust but it might be worth a try.

I have added silver luster dust to my buttercream to get silver. You can also paint in on after the buutercream crusts. What effects are you doing fo rthe space theme? I'm thinking you can cut out shapes with white fondant and paint the fondant silver and then place the pieces on you cake. You can get luster dust on line at www.countrykitchensa.com, cake supply stores and I'm quite sure there's others website and even ebay.
Ok, this cake is for a guy who works for a company that does graphic art for NASA! I am friends with his wife and I told him that I could try and put one of his pics on his b-day cake with a new technique I had never tried before but was willing. This was the pic he sent me and said I could leave out some details to make it easier on me..... but sheesh a mageesh!! this is my first BCT attempt!!! I feel confident about it.. as much as can be expected, but was looking for something to give it a punch.....like a real silver effect!
you can't tell by the small pic I submitted, but there is a little bit of color on the spaceman's suit!! But other than that, all black and gray and white!!!
ok, I did the bct and I think it turned out pretty good. I will finish the cake tomorrow and will post the pic. I bought the silver shimmering dust stuff from Michael's and will try putting it on after I have put the BCT on the cake!! Wish me luck and thanks for the advice!
That cake looks great was it your first BCT? If it was thats a great first try, youll have to ask Dawn about the moisture. I would think it should evaporate as the cake gets up to room temp. Its probably just the humidity from the air condensing on the cold transfer, I did my first BCT on a CCC and let it warm up for about 1 hr before I went back and did the finishing touches so I didnt notice any moisture.
You did a fantastic job! I looked at that photo and thought, No way! But you did it, and did it well! Janice
Amazing! I can't believe its a bct! I never would have even attempted that picture! Great job!

That is out of this world!! LOL!! How long did that transfer take you? It looks fantastic!!
Hey that looks GREAT!! Man he ought to be really pleased and impressed with it. I sure am! Wow! You did good!!
Wow I'm impressed! That turned out so good! How did you get the highlight effects with the colors on a bct? It looks so cool! You did a great job

Ok, 2 questions: What is a CCC? I know about image transfer using a scanner and printer with sugar sheets, is Buttercream Transfer the same thing, or what is it?
I personally tried to get a cross in silver on top of a bible (picture's posted here) but did not work as it came out gray. Later on I learned that in order to get either gold or silver effects with BC you'll need to mix piping gel along with the dusts in a bag. I have not tried it yet, but if you do - let us know.

CCC is a cupcake cake and buttercream transfer (BCT) is done by piping buttercream onto wax paper (image under it) to create a picture, freezing it and then turning it out onto your cake.
All I can say is WOW Suzanna!! You pulled it off and you did an awesome job doing it!! Great job!
Suzanna.... you did it, girl!! Just fabulous, congratulations. I'm sure he'll love it. Please let us know.
