I'm going to try to make a whimsical/topsy turvy cake for my daughter's 19th birthday next month and I need some ideas. She's a very girly-girl. I've looked at the tutorial on this site and I *think* I understand it. However, I think I would prefer to do this in buttercream with fondant accents rather than cover the cakes entirely in fondant. What would be the best way to achieve this? If anyone has any pics, I would love to see them. Thanks so much!

you can do searches in the galleries...there's some good pics out there. I tried a search with just the word "whimsical"...here's the link:

good luck!

I'm sorry to say, I have yet to try this, but I would advise borrowing a copy of the Whimsical Bakehouse book. The authors work almost exclusively in buttercream and their instructions seem very easy to follow. (and so far, I've had great success with their recipes, as well!). I'm still trying to muster up the courage to give one (a tilted cake, that is)a shot.

Hope that helps!
Diane

Thank you Tanya and Diane for your prompt replies. I checked out the cakes on this site and saw a few that I think I might be able to handle. I also thought about the Whimsical Bakehouse book. I've heard nothing but good things about it. Thanks, ladies! icon_smile.gif

Crisseyann,

I just made the one from the WBH this weekend, (but mine was only 2 tiers.) It was quite easy to do. You can see it in my photos. Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

Take a look at my website under birthdays www.alamosweets.com. I made a topsy turvy clown cake for my Grandson. I found the easiest way to make it was to use two styrofoam tiers that I cut at an angle and covered with MMF. The other tiers were covered with BC. This way you can make it crooked and decorate it anyway you want. It is very easy to do it this way and make it as tall as you want without having extra cake left over.
