Buttercream is partly a matter of taste. However, if you go to the recipe pages and search buttercream, there is a great one for crusting buttercream (and smoothing directions) and a non-crusting buttercream. Then there are meringue buttercreams, each a tiny bit different from the other, and each one is someone's favorite.
Best bet is to pick a couple with good reviews and try them for yourself.
Here is my BC frosting recipe:
-5.5 Tbsp Crisco
-3c powdered sugar
-1/4c milk
-1/2tsp. clear vanilla flavoring
-1/2tsp clear butter flavoring
Everyone seems to like it and it also will crust. This makes 3 cups. I have to double it to icing a 1/4 sheet cake!!
