What Is The Nastiest Tasting Product You Have Bought?

I have not bought the wilton fondant but have had it before
I'm with littlecakes on this one...the christmas red food coloring tastes like pure poison!
Just a correction on my Sur la table information, if you are ordering online it is probably much cheaper to go elsewhere. I have a store a few minutes from me so it's just as convenient as the grocery store. I also think you could find similar prices on similar extracts at other kitchen shops. Sur La Table is just convenient for me. And yes, they are pricey, but I have got some pretty good deals on their clearance Magic Line pans.
Before you buy at Sur La Table, try Surfas restaurant supply for your extracts:

Their prices for gourmet quality extracts are much more reasonable.
They have Neilsen-Massey Vanilla (considered to be one of the best) 32 ounces for $21.59. That's only 67 cents an ounce.
I also get my parchment sheets bulk from them.
Check it out!
Thanks for the link! That is an incredible website!
I've never had the Wilton fondant but I say we send the company this thread. Maybe they'll do something about it. Don't they know that it tastes nasty??
Lisasweet...just visited that site! Very cool! Have you ever bought any of their baking pans? Just wondering if anyone has used them and if you like them. It would not do for me to be near that place! I would spend way too much money!
Bavarian creme cake 'filling' in the sleeve from the local cake supply store...it was so nasty neither the kids nor the dog would touch it!
Hands down for me it was the "old Wilton Fondant". The smell of it would make me sick to my stomach and the taste.......well better left unsaid.
Now I know why the IMBC I just made tastes bad!!! My vanilla is Tone's. I'm so freakin' pissed. Oh, and I agree with everything else everyone has said.
You're all welcome for the link! Glad to help out.
NikkiDoc-I've actually purchased their Vollrath cookie sheets which I love to death. I haven't purchased their cake pans yet.
For those of you who use meringue powder, they have it in 1 pound bags MUCH cheaper than Wilton and it smells a lot better (like vanilla). I've used it in Royal Icing with excellent results.
I tried their ready-made gumpaste. I think I got a bad batch because it was EXTREMELY dry and crumbly.
I added shortening to it and worked it for a while to get it soft. I wouldn't dare taste it, though. It doesn't have a pleasant smell.[/quote]
It happened to me too!It was my first time using Wilton gumpaste and it was hard and very dry.And Wilton fondant has a horrible taste, but its easy to work with on the other hand.I use it in things that are not going to be eaten.

I really don't know what it tastes like. I bought a pack of black Wilton fondant because I thought I was taking a class. I couldn't even stand the way it smelled when I opened the package so I didn't use it. (the class fell through because the Wilton instructor kept putting it off and when I showed her my book of cakes she asked "And just why are you taking this class? It looks like you can already do everything included in the class." On the positive side, she got word from Corporate that I could take the class without ever having taken a class before.
Ok, so where was this thread when I needed it? I already knew about the Wilton fondant - beyond YUCK! But I just bought some of the Wilton Whipped frosting mixes and a sleeve of bavarian cream for a cake I was trying to cut out some time on - you know those times when we just need those little short-cuts. I also thought that meringue powder was meringue powder. I just kept using Wilton because it's what I was taught to use. The smell of royal icing is nasty! I wouldn't put it in my mouth. Well, I don't want to put out a shoddy product, so I guess the Wilton frosting and the bavarian cream go in the trash and I've got to get busy! Thanks all!
As an instructor I have to use the wilton fondant but on the cakes I sell I only use MMF Tastes sooooooooooo Good. I do how ever give the recipe for the MMF to my students and tell them this tastes better and is a lot cheaper.
Most will use the wilton because its easy and quick.
Definitely Wiloton fondant...and wilton pipping gel...they bouth taste GROSS!! They're on top of my list of things NEVER EVER to put in my mouth...right next to edible underwear ...just because it says edible doesn't mean you should put it in your mouth ...
My best cake buddy went on a cruise a few months back. She brought me some Mexican vanilla, which was absolutely AMAZING. I could've taken a swim in that bottle...
When I ran out of that, I thought I'd get on the 'net and just order some more. Went to Ebay and ordered some DANNCY'S Mexican vanilla.
OMG......IT SUCKED so BAD! Nastiest smellin' stuff you'd ever want to go near. And it's only magnified in a recipe. I can't really describe it, but it's too...maybe...weird/sweet/chemical--ly? Just wierd.
Don't go near the DANNCY'S, y'all.

OMG---MEL!!!
Yeah. I remember it, alright. I'll never FORGET it, lol! And if I ever get down there, I'm just buyin' a couple CASES of it! (So I can go swimming, of course!)
The good stuff brand is called "Totonac's." Now mind you, it was the Totonac people as a race that actually started cultivating much of the fine Mexican/Madagascar vanillas that we all still use today. They actually consider it "spiritual," and the plant itself is highly revered there.
But the brand was "Totonac's." I've looked for it online, can't find it. I even e-mailed the person listed on the label, to no avail. Nothing back, hadn't heard from them.
My buddy's going back to the Caribbean in the fall, so maybe... ?

Isn't vanilla the yummiest flavor on the planet?! Well chocolate is very good of course, but good vanilla is so underrated I think. Just thought that I would share the yummiest since I've already shared the nastiest. LOL.
Wow.... your passion alone has convinced me that I NEED to try this product!! I will have to ask them to look for it while they're down there!
wilton fondant, and i can't stand the wilton whipped icing, but i know lots of people who love it. yuck!
the other product i recommend everyone to stay away from is CK products immitation clear vanilla. it doesn't even taste close to vanilla. it tastes more like those cheap nasty spice gumdrops you get at the drug store. but it has more of a chemical taste and smell to it.

I got some Mexican vanilla when my husband and I stopped in Cozumel on a cruise last November. Wow, is that stuff good! I could swim in it too! I bought a big bottle of it and shared some with my Mom, she said she didn't care for it... HUH??? I think I'm going to ask for it back! I thought I'd be able to get more on the internet, now after reading this I'm glad I bought the bigger bottle then I was intending!
