Super red or Black icing colour. Doesnt matter what brand it is, if you want the colouring the icing is going to taste nasty!!

I have never used wilton fondant but i have used their recipe. It was a one time and never again thing. Tasted horrible.

I bought a big bottle of Tone's real vanilla at Sam's club... tastes like it has already been ingested and returned for a second go. thumbsdown.gif I don't know what the deal is, but it's baaaaad.

Have any of you tried their ready-made gumpaste? I tried it for the first time last fall and it was surprisingly nice to work with! I've used their gumpaste mix in the past, and wasn't happy with it. It's nice that they offer an alternative now.

I tried their ready-made gumpaste. I think I got a bad batch because it was EXTREMELY dry and crumbly. I was using it in the new gumpaste and fondant course, and even my instructor had to agree that it was almost unusable.

I added shortening to it and worked it for a while to get it soft. I wouldn't dare taste it, though. It doesn't have a pleasant smell.

I don't think there's such a thing as a good-tasting gumpaste! Good thing it's not really meant to be eaten.

I don't think the Wilton gumpaste should be that dry. You must've had a bad batch.

The nastiest thing I've ever bought...Wilton clear vanilla and Wilton clear Almond. I didn't realize that they were not pure until after I used them. My icing had a terrible after taste and tasted incredibly artificial. I could not use the icing and threw it out along with the flavorings. NEVER AGAIN!

What brand and where do you get your vanilla? I use wiltons and have really not had a problem with them but will try anything different.

Mareg, I usually get McCormick brand from the grocery store. I always get the Pure Almond Extract and Pure Vanilla Extract. If it says "imitation" anywhere on the label or ingredients list, I don't buy it. I have gotten very used to the natural flavors and anything else is an offense to my palate. I do use the Wilton imitation butter flavor if I can't find the McCormick. It is fine in my opinion, but if I can get McCormick instead, I do.

Beside Wilton Fondant (thankfully I found you guys and Toba Garrett's book before I actually tried it to cover a cake - I do like it for details though), that McCormack imitation strawberry extract. I wonder if there is the real thing available somewhere?

On a side note for those who buy extracts in the grocery stores. A 1 oz bottle of lemon extract is $5.99 in my local stores. I was perusing Sur La Table's extracts Saturday and was REALLY surprised that a 4 oz bottle of lemon extract was only $6.95! four times as much for only a dollar more. It's really good too. Star Kay White is the brand. I was really surprised to find such a deal in Sur La Table! I will never buy extracts in the grocery store again!

ditto on
1) Wilton's fondant
2) Tone's vanilla
3) any "artificial" extract

jury still out on Wilton Butter (anyone got a better suggestion?)

or mix w/ BC for light fluffy filling (and tho' haven't tried -- bet could mix w/ nondairy whipped topping/bEttercream and it's ilk icing too)

The first time I bought the box of multi colored pastel Wilton fondant I was so excited to try it. All 4 colors were slimy and almost greasy. I had to dump the whole thing. I HATE Wilton fondant.

I'm with you. My party store used to carry Henry and Henry fruit fillings in the sleeve and they were very good. Sadly they went out of business last year, went to Cash & Carry and bought whatever brand it is they carry, didn't like it at all, very artificial tasting. I did improve it a little bit by adding Fran's Raspberry sauce to it. So when you get yours from CK let us know what you think of it, please?

Wilton Fondant!!!!

After reading all of the posts, it is nice to know that it isn't just me. I thought all fondant tasted bad. I found a recipe for MMF here on cc and LOVE it! I'll stick to that, thank you very much.

You know it's funny, Wilton proclaims themselves to be the one and only in everything, from technique to stuff they sell, and yet you'd think they would at least TRY to make a tastier product! At the teacher's meeting last year even the teachers were complaining about it because we were being forced to push this garbage and none of us could in good conscience because it tasted so horrible. I don't know, I just don't get it...icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks Sugarbunz for the tip! But where/what in the world is Sur La Table? I've never heard of it. Going to look on the web for it. I run out of extracts so quickly and they are expensive when you buy the pure ones. I need to get bigger quantities and it would be nice to save some money too!

Sur La Table (pronouced sur-la-tab) is an online very swanky kitchen store, similar to Williams-Sonoma. Get the credit card ready...icon_lol.gif

Okay found it. I must have got confused. It was at the Star Kay White site that I could not find vanilla. I found it at Sur La Table. It was $18.95 for 8 oz. The McCormick that I usually get at the grocery is about 4.50 for 1 oz. So yeah...I'm going to try their Madagascar Vanilla! icon_smile.gif The Tahitian is $38.95 for 8 oz. It must be very good...wish I could try that one!

2. Tone's Vanilla (I wish this thread had been made before I bought it.)
3. Food Coloring (This may just be me, but I can taste when frosting has food coloring in it. I still use it though.)

Before you buy at Sur La Table, try Surfas restaurant supply for your extracts:
https://www.surfasonline.com/productlines/186.cfm?startrow=1
Their prices for gourmet quality extracts are much more reasonable.
They have Neilsen-Massey Vanilla (considered to be one of the best) 32 ounces for $21.59. That's only 67 cents an ounce.
I also get my parchment sheets bulk from them.
Check it out! thumbs_up.gif

Oh yeah...Wilton Fondant...foulest stuff on the planet! I use Satinice.

I know what's wrong with Tone's Pure Vanilla!!! Unfortunately I bought it, too. It has corn syrup in it! Nasty!! Although, I have to agree, not as nasty as Wilton's fondant!
