Thank you very much for sharing how you made the bottles. Your cakes are awesome. This will be very helpful to me and others.
Your rock !!!!!!!
Michael's sells the rubber latex, but whew...it's very stinky! It's located int he clay/paper mache aisle.
I am just checking, is this like what you used?

Yup - that's basically it!
You will still need some regular clay to form a hard mold of the half bottle to use as a support for the latex mold as the sugar is very hot when you pour it in.
I made the sugar bottles a couple of times but they are kinda sticky even after they cool and harden. Are they supposed to be sticky (the sugar bottle had palm/finger prints all over it from where I "unraveled" the rubber mold)?
it could be the humidity - but if they sit out of the mold for a bit they shouldn't stay sticky, reallly important to not get them wet.
Plus, one the label is on and the cap and they are in the cake you'd be surprised at how you don't see those things any more.
okay sorry sweetresults, I have one more question ! I understand you dont paint the bottom but how far do you paint down on the bottle? Do you go a little under the bottom edge? And when you are pouring in the sugar do you have it set in the clay form the whole time and just keep rotating as you are filling or do you hold it? Thanks for your help! I think I am going to try and take my 3 boys to the store to get supplies. Yikes.
I can't wait to try one of these. The look too real! How do you make the bottle caps? Do you make a mold from them as well? Thanks!!!!
SweetResults...well I attempted the sugar bottle last night, but for some reason they would not get hard inside the mold. Any suggestions? Actually the first bottle hardened great, but number 2 and 3 never did. I'm wondering if I need to reduce the amount of corn syrup? Thanks.
Barbara
Also, is there a specific place you went to for the labels on the bottles?
I am having problems finding the rubber latex, any suggestions where to find it??? I need it ASAP! Thanks!
I found mine at hobby lobby. Joann's did not have it. It was near the clay and candle stuff.
Barbara-ann, I'm getting ready to do my own beer bottles and my local grocery store is printing my labels for me. I did them on the computer and printed them then took them to the store. They charge $6 a sheet and I can get 6 labels onto one sheet.
Darn! My mold didnt turn out ! It got all stretched out when I tried to remove it. Now it is all lumpy and wierd. I made it over 2 days, and it seemed dry enough but i guess I didnt do it right. My husband had all these suggestions AFTER I messed up. Any other suggestions? I was thinking about going to the store and trying the other mold stuff, but I think I could only do a half mold, it was like a putty stuff. It said it was for candy and what not. boo for me, I am disapointed.
That's what happened with my first mold. With the second one I sprinkled it with baby powder before removing it and it stopped it from all sticking togoether.

Where did you find the labels? Did you make them up youself?
Thanks for the info.

Yes I just made them up myself using Print Shop on the computer. They were fairly easy to do.
i love this cake and need to make it by this saturday coming up for a party my sister is throwing. But i am going to have to drive the cake an hour & a half away. I was wondering if anyone knew what size pans sweetresults used or what size pans are good to use (i dont want it to look too small after i get it all together) and also do i need to use a support system in the cake? The last thing i want is hitting a bump on the way there and the cake just die on me. TIA!!
I would also love to know how to achieve the ice look. Anyone find out please let me know
for the ice look you just make the sugar the same as the beer bottles but dont melt as long and then pour it on crinkled up tin foil and when it dries you crush it with a hammer. pretty sure i read this somewhere in this post. HTH
Thanks Melissa043! Can't wait to update my beer cake now. After seeing the ones here, I couldn't possibly share my cake (well unless someone wants a good ole laugh). LOL But my beer bottle cake was THE very 1st cake I ever made. It started this whole cake biz for me....I only wanted to do cupcakes
boy it is a good thing you got into the cake biz, your work is so creative and fantastic!
