I have been looking for some unusual items to make into cake stands.
I have used plant stands before. Any other ideas?
What about a sturdy set of glass or acrylic vases bowls filled with water and some roses. Or Lights?
any more ideas you have used or seen?

Large flower pots, even the terra cotta ones, right side up or upside down, as a base. Brandy snifters, haha, that is an oldie. Wicker baskets. Punch bowl pedestals or any kind of pedestal dish.

We use the styroform circles that you buy at the craft store with ribbon around the edges to match the events color. You can attach the ribbon with foral pins. It worked well to give some height. I have a picture but it has my mom in it. So I cant post it. Sorry, Hope that is good enough explanation.

I have always wanted to do a cake(s) and display them on one of those skinny baker's racks that you put plants on. You know what I'm talking about? They have four or five shelves on them! Oh yeah, now THAT would be cool!

I just bought some of those huge plate platters that they put under china at fancy dinner parties for 1.00 each at the Good Will! (I also found a beautiful wedding cake topper (a bell with some flowers) for a buck...I was so excited, people must have thought I was crazy! haha

Anyway, I use anything I can find. I wish I could afford a fancy silver stand...

I saw the hurricane lamps.NICE.I saw some glass blocks too. What about a large wood block just covered in foil.
OK here is another thought.
What about pillers or supports.
Like-Dowels ran through a wooden ball covered in fondant. So it would appear as if the ball was holding up the next tier???
Or in my case using the Stress Free cake support. with the ball

Oooo! Excellent idea! They're called "Chargers" - I have no idea where that name comes from. You can often find them for mucho money in fancy stores and then run into something pretty decent looking for ridiculously cheap at bargain places. If you get them cheap, you could also hot glue them to some sort of foot/riser.

My brother emailed this to me the other day. I am not sure where he found it. We are looking for cake ideas for his son's wedding in April. He wants something different. This is really different.

When they were talking about using the big margarita glasses, I thought it would be ineresting with fish in them. That is very different!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Wow! What kind of support did you use on the bottom tier? All that water must have been heavy!

Well, not exactly stands, but I love to find serving trays or melamine plates at the dollar store - they usually have some very pretty seasonally decorated ones. And, at a dollar, the plate or tray can be given to the receipient as a gift! I have also used the plastic "crystal-look" serving trays from Michael's or Hobby Lobby or Party City - they look very nice!

Just a thought on the fish stand...it looks AWESOME...but, I was at a wedding where they had those fish bowls with fish in them as centerpieces, and some of the fish died...so people ended up with floating dead fish as their centerpiece. EW!

I would maybe think about putting some fake fish floating in there...actually it could be cool to fill them with clear gel (which is probably much lighter than water!) and you could suspend flowers or shells or anything like that in there!!
