Hello everyone! I am a newbie baker, I can make a great basic cake but I am like a fish out of water when it comes to decorating. Anyway, I have a class project coming up for a foods class I'm in at my highschool. I wanted to make a beach theme cake and I was wondering would this be a good idea for a beginner and all. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sure! You can do it! Crush up some graham crackers for sand.....
you could cut a cake to make it look like a flip flop and use fruit roll ups for the straps.

i think it's a great idea. do a search in the gallery for beach cakes or tropical, etc. and you'll get tons of pictures. a few simple ideas here, brown sugar works great for sand, those chocolate shell candies are a great and easy way to put seashells on the cake. the possiblilities are endless

Would you have to "line" the well with something to keep it from seeping into the cake itself? If so, what would you use? That's an awesome idea, but I just see blue cake.

I've done this before twice.
Ice the well with a decent layer of buttercream, making sure there are no gaps and no cake is showing through. Put it in the fridge while you make the jello.

Make the jello according to the quick-set package directions. Put it in the fridge and check on it frequently. You want it to start thickening, but not to be chunky at all. Pour it in to the well in the cake and put the cake in the fridge to set up completely. The Jello will be smooth and it won't soak into the cake! It tastes a lot better than you'd think, too!

Smashcakes is right. There are so many beach theme cakes in the galleries. I'm sure there is one in there that you would feel comfortable doing. I like the idea of blue jello for the water.

I also did a beach themed cake and used crushed graham crackers for the sand and used piping gel tinted blue for my water. It did not seep at all through the cake. I also used flip-flop candles and plastic palm trees.

Hi! Welcome to CC..
Ice your entire cake with white icing... then get your crushed graham crackers and place it on one side of the cake.. then you can add some blue dye to your white icing and add it to the other end..get a butter knife and make waves in the icing.. then you can get some gummy life safers and stick graham cracker bears in the center of those and stick them in the water.. get some zebra gum and roll one end just a little making a float, add a graham cracker bear (hehe) laying on the "float" getting a tan.. place those on the sand side.
GOOD LUCK and have fun!!
