Doesn't that stuff expand? It might be pretty difficult. Is it the texture you want or a long lasting coating? You might try spackling or joint compound. This was suggested in another forum by cambo. Try searching for "spackling or joint compound" if you are interested.

that's a good question, though I haven't tried it yet.

I was at home Depot last week, and at the checkout, they had the 6oz cans on clearance for 75 cents a can, marked down from $3.29. (It's been so warm, they haven't sold much this winter). So anyway, I had no idea what to do with it, but today am going to experiment with it a bit by building a frame to contain the sides and maybe some saran wrap so it doesn't stick to the wood.

I'll keep ya informed, if you haven't tried it before I do.

I tried to use it this winter on a castle pan. You can not touch it until it dries. I covered the pan with saran wrap, but couldn't get it so settle into the bottom of the pan for the raised shapes. I used celluclay instant paper mache'.

makes sense, and NO never tough this stuff until it's dried. I use latex gloves, 2 on each hand, because it's been known to eat through them after a bit.
