Has anyone made plaid fondant? I am doing an anniversary cake for me & DH & have been agonizing over what to do. I came up with using his clan tartan as maybe a "swag" on the cake. But with my lofty ideas comes the part where I am no sure where to start. lol

Here is a pic..tell me what you think. I am drawing blanks. icon_razz.gif

I did a plaid bow on a cupcake wreath (you can see it in my photos) and it was a witch! I rolled out the red, rolled out the green, cut green strips and then applied them to the red and rolled lightly again. I then painted pearl white lines on it. The bow was very fragile and tended to crack where the green was applied. I wouldn't do it this way again.

With the tartan you've posted, I would make a round cake and around it I would construct the tartan using fondant squares--red, light red, and black. I'd then overpipe it with fine dark grey or black lines and white double lines--probably with a #1 or #2 tip.

To do a swag instead, I'd probably paint gumpaste or fondant with gumtex in it--rolls thinner, drapes better. I'd start with a light red base and paint darker red and black squares, black and white lines. You'd have to work quickly on this so that it wouldn't crack and would remain pliable so that it would drape. Smaller, multiple drapes would be best.

Have fun, good luck, and post a pic when you're finished!
