for those of you that model out of gum paste or fondant- where did you learn how? i've seen such realistic looking figures on some cakes, it's incredible. was it just practice or is there a good book on it? or do you just have to have that talent?, cuz right now, i don't have it
Well, from looking at the two cakes in your photos, you have talent! I love the basket cake! Anyway, the gumpaste work I have done has just been from practice. I found a picture and copied it into gumpaste, like my JoJo cake. Or I have found that for figure modeling Maisie Parrish and Debbie Brown are the best! I have Maisie Parrish's first book and three of Debbie Brown's and they are great! They both give great instructions and they are not super complicated. All of Maisie's work is done in marzipan but you could use gumpaste no problem. If your looking for flowers in gumpaste, I have a book called "Cakes By Design" by Scott Clark Wooley. He is awesome and his book is great. His instructions aren't as clear as the others but they are still helpful. I hope this helps you! I would say just get some books or find a character you'd like to practice with and go for it. There are also some great tools out there too. www.globalsugarart.com has a lot of stuff from many different suppliers so I'd look into that.
Have fun,
Heather
