Photo Gallery - Do People's Favourites Seem Odd To You?

I've just been looking at my photos on this site and have noted which cakes have been saved as people's favourites and the results seem weird to me. My most popular cake is the snowmen have a snowball fight one - which has suprised me. It seems to me that this one is fairly 'usual' and I would have expected some of my more way out ones to have been 'favourited' more.

This got me wondering what, if anything, people do with this information. Should I assume that if lots of people have looked at a cake but few have saved it as a favourite that it's not good and I shouldn't make more cakes like it?

I personally have only about four cakes on my favourites list as they're cakes that are very different or show a technique I might have a go at another time. I have several people listed as buddies as I like their style and I check their photos every now and again to see if they've done anything new. Actually wouldn't it be good to receive an automatic PM alert if one of your favourite decorators has done a new cake?

So do you care what people have listed as their favourites? Does it influence your style?

for me I will favorite a cake that I just love, because it is awesome, even if I will never try to make one like it. I will also save ordinary cakes for future ideas. Sometimes I save them because there is a certain thing I want to try off of that cake. I have quite a few saved cakes in my favorites. I am guessing what people saves just depends on who they are and what their style is. For me I feel good if someone saves my cakes. As for views it gives me a good feeling to know that someone wanted to look deeper at my cake, but with no comment, I also know that it may not mean they find it particularly good. I think I have moved into rambling now. It is almost 1 am here, maybe I should be off to bed before I stop having coherent thoughts. Maybe, that has already happened. LOL

I have your snowman cake saved in my favourites because it is something that I may someday be competent enought to try to make. Your other cakes are fantastic but no way could I ever hope to make anything like that.

I like to save cakes to fave for techniques. I either see the cake as a whole, such as a lovely green and daisy cake Nati did, or a particular technique that I'd like to try.

I may LOVE a cake, but I won't save it to my favorites, if it's out of my league. Plus, I don't do fondant, so I won't save any of these that can't be easily transferred to buttercream... So, my faves are for "hopes to try something similar in the future"... Others are eye candy, but nothing more...

i don't know if odd, but sometimes it makes me wonder about comments that, the cakes that took me time and i was kind of more proud of them get less comment than the easier ones. anyway, people have different tastes and what seems interesting for one might not be as much for the other.

what i find odd, when looking in the gallery is pictures that are favourite of for example 6 people and only one comment.

Emmascakes -- Your cakes are outstanding and I don't think that I could ever attempt one of your cakes, that's why I don't save yours to my favorites. I save the cake photos that I think are do-able at my skill level.

I understand where you're coming from and I certainly gage a cake's popularity by the number of comments I received for it and also the number of people who save it to their favourites.
I have about 4 pages of cakes saved, normally I save them because they are outstanding to me and I want to replicate, either the whole cake or part of it at least.
Sometimes I may do a search for something specific and I'll save cakes that interest me.
I don't save very many cakes, I comment on very few also. Not because the cakes I see here everyday aren't wonderful, but because I don't know that dozens of comments helps anyone, but I do try to comment if people ask for advice, if I feel I can help.

I have 8 pages of favorites. I save cakes that I think are awesome - ones that I want to make something similar later one, ones that I have no intent of making but are just so incredible I have to save them. When I have to make a cake and need some ideas, I often surf for photos and then save anything that I might be interested in pulling something from.

Your snowman cake is soooo cute! I already have a bunch of your cakes in my favorites anyway....I think my favorite is the Cinderella....I'd love to make a pillow cake someday! icon_smile.gif

I noticed that some of my favorite cakes don't have a whole lot of favorites, but that's okay by me. Just the fact they belong in SOMEONE'S favorites means a lot!

emmascakes, HOLY COW! Your cakes are awesome!!! I would never even attempt to try one of your creations I just don't have the patience for that fine of detail (maybe after my kids have grown I can get more involved!). But as far as what I save into my fav's, I choose cakes that may not necessarily be something great but there may be a technique that I like (maybe a certain border) and will use on another of my cakes. Like on your pillow cake I may like the shoe's high heel but wouldn't attempt the pillows. Again, your cakes are amazing!!!!!
Could you please put out a cake decorating book???? I'll buy it!!!!!

emmascakes, Your cakes blow me away. They are so unique. I usually save cakes to my favs when I am searching for ideas. I will also save some that I like and think I can do that if I can find someone to do it for. Those are usually the freebies I take to work for birthdays so I can get a picture in my book for paying clients to see. I am one of the guilty ones who when searching for ideas will save the pic in my favs and not leave a comment. I never realized it might make someone feel bad. That will now change.

I use the Favorites kinda like a concept board -- whenever I have a new cake and need ideas, I go through the galleries saving pics that might apply to my design. For example, when I did a Baby Einstein cake, I saved about 10 Baby Einstein cakes to faves. After I finally made the cake, I deleted them.

I also have cakes saved that I just love and hope to replicate someday, like some really cool stringwork (which I basically stink at doing). Someday! Someday!

Thanks guys for some interesting thoughts. I always comment on those I view - but there are hoards of people out there who don't - I have one cake with 889 views and something like 15 comments; it's not that I need to collect compliments - but if someone doesn't comment because they can see flaws, think t's bad colour combinations or whatever I would like to know. I'm not at all precious about my cakes and am very happy to listen to criticism and new ideas. However I will admit that I won't ever post a criticism of something so maybe I'm being hypocritical!

you do have beautiful cakes Emma, I don't always leave comments for I'm so short on time but when I do have the time, I try to.

that being said, none of my photos get comments but I try to never worry about that at all, I know I'm still learning and I came to this forum to learn !

Life is just too short for me to worry about if what I do trips someone's trigger, I think peer review is great but customers rule, so if your customers are happy then that's what truly matters?

You have to remember too that a lot of members save the image directly onto their computer....not into a Favourites folder on this site.

I have hundreds of photos from here saved, but that wouldn't show up in the tally on here.

But Kissmycookie, they don't get comments because you don't allow that feature in your profile....not because we don't love what you do! (Your duck cupcake toppers are adorable, but we can't leave you feedback.) Check your My Forum Info page to change that. thumbs_up.gif

Emma, I think your results are like that because you are right up there in a league with Colette Peters. Your cakes are FANTASTIC! However, most people here may not save them to their favorites because they may think that they could never create something like that. I know that I love looking at your cakes but I don't know when if ever I would have the ability to create something as beautiful. Did I just make sense???

I posted this observation on another thread yesterday. Maybe it applies here?

"Some brides come here just to look at cakes and get ideas. Is it possible that some of the pics that are marked favorites are just being saved by these brides to build a portfolio of ideas? If so, I would just suggest that they are "window shopping" and perhaps unfamiliar with the purpose of this site .... sharing ideas and feedback.

Just a thought......"

I save cakes in my favs for several reasons:
1. I'm wanting to make a similar cake
2. The cake is awesome and I don't want to forget what I'm striving for.
3. Or it's so unique I don't want to forget it!
