Wow, it looks like it would just barely serve 80 with not much to spare! I was clicking around though and there are some pretty cakes, the price on the one with the swiss dots was outrageous too! Thanks for the link.

I don't really care for the cake. The cake part itself is pretty, but I don't like the flower globe or the curves on the pole. JMHO

Those cakes always make me wonder what they actually taste like. Because if it doesn't taste exceptional, it wasn't worth ten cents a serving in my opinion.

Well, sorry I didn't comment before, I was busy quadrupling my cake prices, er busy organizing, haha!
Have I not been on your cases about underpricing for custom cakes, haha!
I think it is well done, not something I would pick out but tastes vary a lot. I like topiaries, I just don't find it balances with the rest of the cake, but that is just me. The flowers and the swirls would add on to the cost of the cake for sure, but even at that, well it does seem high priced.
But heck, I would do it for that price!

I must be in the wrong market!! it was pretty enough, probably doing all the "fluff" is what made the price what it is, now i see how weddings get sooo ridiculous. i think my cake was250-300 to feed about 200 people . i still get positive comments on that cake and it was 7 years ago

It doesnt look like an easy cake to do at all. I would be comfortable doing the bottom two tiers but as soon as it gets to the topiary i wouldnt have a clue. how do you keep a round cake up like that??? the flowers seem to be piped royal icing, even if the ball was styrofoam ( which i dont think it is because of the way it's described ) i'd have trouble piping the flowers so evenly to get it so neat. Even if the cake doesnt taste great, i think that here ppl are paying for art, i would assume this is a cake for the super rich or the stars. OH if only i could get customers like that!!! sigh!!

Some people have this attitude that it's not good if it's not expensive. I'm with those of you who think taste is just as if not more important than looks. Anyone who would consider spending $1500 on a cake would probably have a heck of a wedding! I'd like to have that kind of money to throw around icon_lol.gif

I checked out the other cakes too. Some were pretty fantastic.

Well you know, some of the cakes are worth the $10 a serving when you see the amount of work and know the costs and time involved. I just don't see that cake as being that complicated for the price range. the side flowers on the cake itself are not spectacular or complex but they are well done. Some of the decorations and flowers on the other cakes are much harder to do, time consuming etc. Some have far too many bunched up flowers and look top heavy in my opinion but the flowers themselves are gorgeous, just don't look balanced with some of the cakes. But they are all well done.
I am glad you shared this post though, makes it interesting for us.

Boonnati, the way they state "the traditional third tier is traded in" makes me believe this isn't cake at all, strictly a topiary. Yes those roses would take a long time to do, no doubt. But I suspect they are just gluegunned to a styrofoam or grapevine type of ball.
And here is a cheater way of getting that effect, you can buy porcelain look roses at Michaels and glue them on. I actually made up a couple of topiaries using this method.

I noticed this cake came from Francois Payard's store in New York Cityicon_smile.gif As I have read, this man has a HUGE following and apparently his product is top notch and can rival any french bakery in France. So he obvioulsy he can charge what he wants icon_smile.gif

Yes Missjane, I think that is a good point, when someone builds an excellent reputation, they can charge what they want. I think there is also a certain amount of snob factor involved in being able to say that one purchased their wedding cake from a specific bakery or cake designer. At the same time, the baker, designer gets to limit his customers to people who choose first and then find out the costs.
I just don't see this particular design as warranting the cost compared to others on that site. But then, it doesn't really matter because there will be someone willing to pay the price.

It looks like some misbehaved child stuck one of the table decorations in the cake.
