cutting and carving cake

I have a poker cake to do for this weekend and I have to cut a 2-layer 16" cake into a 8-sided poker table (like a stop sign) and was wondering if anyone had ever cut a cake in that shape and could give me some tips on how to do this. I was thinking about making a template out of cardboard and using that. Would that work?

icon_smile.gif First of all , not all types of cake can be carved..it has to be something dense like Pound Cake..what is the cake flavor and type ? icon_smile.gif

it is going to be a lemon cake with lemon buttercream filling.

I think that the lemon cake would be fine for carving. Is it a box cake mix or homemade? Be sure to crumb coat the cut sides and let the crumb coat dry well before adding the finish coating.

You idea of making the template would work very nicely. I use this method a lot for carving and also for transferring an image to a cake.

I usually chill my cakes before cutting - the cake is easier to handle, and it helps cut out on the amount of crumbs too.
