You can definately keep the DW frosting in the fridge. Just give it a few hours to warm up before you use it. 
Actually you can keep it out for a few days, just press plastic wrap on it to keep from crusting. The easter basket cake I made was made with DW frosting.
I asked this very question (icing v. frosting) and the answer I got was, there is no difference. I guess its just what region you're from. I use both just to mess with people!!
