That sugar art was around in the 10th Century. The ancient Egyptians had sugar adorning their feast tables. 13th Century Arabs discovered the artistic values of sugar. England did not know sugar until around 1600 and it became common place up until around 1700. And sugar did not become common place in the US until around the 1800's.
Sugar is grown as sugar cane or beet sugar. The difference being that sugar cane the sugar is stored in the leaves of the plant, where as beet sugar it is stored in the roots of the plant.
It is even spoken of in the Old Testament in the book of Exodus. God fed the exiled Israelites with what was called "manna" it was like coriander seeds, white, and tasted like a wafer made from honey. Manna is the term referred to in the sugar rich sucretions of some trees and plants.
