Those really large martini/margarita glasses!!!

So I was at Michael's today and saw those really huge glasses and thought to myself, "Why not use one of those to display my dummy cake on for the cake show!!" Has anyone ever used one of those really tall glasses to display a cake on? I seem to recall a while back seeing one cake displayed on one. I'd like to know how they did it. I have some ideas how to do it and make it secure so it won't slip and slide but just wanted to have other opinions for this idea!!!

GMTA! saw same, had same idea. but, personally, to get the strongest base, I'd use the glass upside down. You could put some time of decorative froo-froo inside the bowl.

Saw them, too. I would put some of that non-skid shelf liner on the bottom of the cake base/board and sit on top of glass. They also make an impressive display or server of cake balls.

I have one...but never used it for a cake stand. I'm too afraid the cake would just be too heavy & it would topple icon_redface.gif Love to know if you try it out and how you do it! I use mine to float candles in; during Christmas, I fill it with cranberris and tuck a few votive candles in it; for Valentine's I fill it with red-hots and we snack on 'em; then during Mardi Gras we use it to contain our bead collection...which always ends up spilling out of it! For small parties, I've used it as an ice bucket, with a scoop in it, at the drink table; used it to hold party favors for a bday party; and at Thanksgiving I made cranberry relish and served it out of the giant martini glass on the buffet. I've done everything I can do with it, except for using it as a cake stand...lol icon_lol.gif

I've seen them at various places, Michael's included. Usually around $7.50 - $10. Never thought about it until now, but IF you use it right side up, maybe you could hot glue something that's roughly the same size opening as the glass top, then it could be supported enough that way?

Then again, I'd really reccommend drinking said martini or margarita out of one of them, (I have and it'll knock you one your...), Then maybe you can think of a few better ways to make it steady.
hahaha, whatever.

JennT~ Holy cow! You HAVE used it for everything!!!

I've had a margarita in a glass just about that big at Casa De Bandini's in San Diego! Those margaritas will definately knock you on your keester!

I never thought about turning it upside down. I was definately going to put something in the bowl of the glass either way. Upside down I think would be better. I'll just have to measure again how big around the base it and adjust the size of my cake. The cake is just going to be styrofoam with fondant so it's not going to be too awful heavy...hmmmmm!!!

I will definately use a non-skid! Thanks for the reminder!

What about some ideas as to what to put inside the glass?

I thought about decorated sugar cubes or fondant rose petals???

at my Michaels they had metal foil streamers and glass ornaments.

anything that would fit inside (well except gerbiles, hamsters, etc.) could work

and if you use it right side up, could even put water and a Beta fish in it to go w/ an aquatic theme.

I love Doug's fishbowl idea! You could fill it with citrus fruits - oranges, lemons, limes...or a combination of them. If you choose just one citrus fruit, then you could intersperse a few small white flowers with them, too, for a different look; but the 'one-fruit look' looks good too...hope that makes sense. Or you could try some of what I mentioned I'd used...cranberries, red-hots, mardi gras beads, silk flowers, real flowers....you could take some real flowers, ones with large petals or real showy ones, like bright gerberas or peonies, and submerge them in water in the glass...I've done that for a centerpiece, but if you have a base on the top of it for your cake, that would look really pretty, I think. Ooohhh - coffee beans would look neat too! Or get some of that curling ribbon used for giftwrap and curl it up and stuff it in there. lol I could probably think of more, if I kept going! icon_lol.gificon_rolleyes.gif

If you use the glass upside down, I would suggest filling it with whatever you decide to use, then use a base to put on top of it and then flip it over so that the glass is then upside down. Much easier than trying to fill the glass once it's already upside down.
