I am doing a baby shower cake (they know it is going to be a girl) I was thinking of doing a 9 or 10 inch round cake, (maybe even making the batter pink) and just white buttercream frosting, with pink edging. I am planning on putting baby booties on top, and want to write the words "Sugar and Spice and everything nice..." on it, in script. I was planning on just printing it out on the computer, laying wax paper over it and writing it out in royal icing. Do y'all think it will peel off the wax paper ok to put on the cake or should I use something else? (my handwriting not only sucks, but I can never get it straight!) Can I do the same thing with like baby pins?
Haven't tried what you're suggesting. I know from watching all those holiday shows on foodnetwork that premade royal icing decorations are prone to breakage. You might have to make those letters several times before you can transfer them w/ breakage.
If you can get a mirror image of the script, then trace it on wax paper in black food pen, then turn the wax paper over and rub it onto your cake you can trace it with icing then...
After you print it out (if you can't reverse it prior to printing) flip over the paper and trace the letters on the back. If it is during the day you can do it against a window and it will help you see the letters on the other side better. Lay some clear glass over it (like the glass from a picture frame) and using royal icing, trace your letters on to the glass. Let these dry. When it is dry you can then flip it over onto your cake and press the royal icing letters into the icing. When you raise up the glass it will leave imprints of your letters and then you can go back over those with your buttercream icing and trace out your message on your cake.

THAT IS BRILLANT!!!!! WHAT A tip!
I do royal icing letters a lot. I find, if they are really dry, they slide right off the wax paper pretty easily. I still make two sets just to be on the safe side when ever I do them, but I also do block letters. Not just basic writing.
I think that these ideas are great, but one little tip i have to write in a straight (well straighter) line is to write bottom to top. instead of side to side. Physics demand that when writing side to side we unconsiously write in an arc. But if i write (turn the cake so that you would start writing at the "bottom" of the cake and go "upwards" I tend to not have the arc problem and my writing is straighter. Don't know if this helps but hey I try. lol
Thanks for all the great hints! I will be making the cake next weekend (am making the writing this week though, to give it plenty of time to dry) and will post a photo!
