Ever since last years party, my daughter has been talking about having a Flamingo party for her 4th birthday. I thought for SURE she would forget about it by the time 4 rolls around....Nope. Not even close. icon_lol.gif
I have set myself up big time with her cakes and now I have to make this on stand up to the other 3. I'm crazy! icon_lol.gif However, if anyone knows what I mean, it's you people!

You can see my last one, which had a jungle/savanna cake, in my photos. I could use palm trees again, those were fun to make. But the actual cake?? Any ideas? I was thinking of trying something other than fondant figures. Afterall, flamingos aren't going to stand very well. Willing to try some other sugar art, since I have plenty of time to practice. Also, I was thinking about doing the technique where you basically use melted chocolate and draw it onto wax paper tracing an image (or not) and then it hardens and you can stand them up on the sides of the cake. I haven't tried that, but I could probably do it.

Thanks!!

you could make "flamingo" shaped cookies and put them on sucker sticks. You could decorate them with colorflow or how about this idea. Make the cookies and just put white royal on them and then get some of those kewl edible markers and have the girls decorate their own flamingoes.
Just a thought.

I remember seeing storks for a baby shower cake that stood up. I think it was in one of the wilton books. They molded the body and used a sucker stick for the leg. (i hope I am remembering right icon_confused.gif )
You could just make them flamingos instead of storks

Thanks for the ideas. I like the cookie and stick idea, but I might do that independently of the cake. I'm still brainstorming this one, so keep them coming! thumbs_up.gif
Thanks!

I put a simple flamingo cookie in the cookie gallery. Wilton made the cookie cutter although I think I have seen other cutters around for flamingos. Hope that helps.

I made a flamingo from royal icing and attached it to a lollipop stick to put on top of a FL lottery cake. Check out my photos to see what it looks like.

My daughter had a flamingo birthday party last September. I, too was lost for an idea. I wasn't confident about making the cake myself, so I ordered from a bakery. But here's what we did.....we had the cupcake tree (from cake supply store) and, on the top stand, we had an 6" or 8" round, with the birthday greetings on the side. Then, on the bottom two layers of the stand, we had cupcakes with white frosting, and sprinkles, with flamingo picks sticking up. It was pretty cute. The flamingo picks were from Oriental trading, and they were actually large toothpick type sticks, only I cut them down to cupcake size. The flamingos were (I can't think of the name right now?) honeycomb, so they were 3-d effect. We put the candles on the top of the cake, so it looked pretty cool. I hope this all makes sense? I would love to send a picture, but I have no idea how to do that? I hope this makes sense? When is the party?

PS the cupcake stand we got was styrofoam like, and it had a flat top. That was important for this idea to work out. It was about $12 for the stand

We did a flamingo theme for my oldest daughter's 7th birthday. I made a double layer 9in round cake topped with a dome, baked in a mixing bowl. I frosted the rounds with blue BC and the dome with green BC. I topped it with palm trees and pink flamingo 'toothpicks'. I ordered these from Oriental Trading Company too, they were pink plastic and sort of see through. The idea was for it to look like an island with the flamingos wading in the water. I have photos, but they are film and my scanner is down. Sorry

Here's a couple of ideas:

a 3d flamingo: http://www.sweetconfectionspa.com/Flamingo.jpg

This one is really neat:

Or you could do a tiered cake...one of the tiers could be piped to look like this:

with a huge flamingo perched on the top tier

or you could do one tier like this (or a sheet cake)
