What Do You Think Of Sylvia Weinstock's Book?

I got 4 cake books for Christmas this year, and I LOVED all of them EXCEPT... "Sweet Celebrations" by Sylvia Weinstock.

Is ist just me? Is it because I'm comparing it to the other books I bought (Colette's Cakes to Dream On, Margaret Braun's Cakewalk, Debbie Brown's Naughty Cakes?)

Don't get me wrong, I think Sylvia's gumpaste flowers are amazing, but a lot of the piping seemed coarse and amateurish (for someone so well known) and the cakes themselves nothing all that special.

I wish she had written a book on making flowers (this book had barely 9 pages on flowers, and very few illustrations in that section)... THAT would have be something special!

Anybody love something in this book that I'm not seeing? I'm actually thinking about returning it and getting something else, but I'd love to hear from you guys... any suggestions for some great books?

I love Kate Sullivan's "Kate's cake decorating." It has lots of great cakes in it. Also, Debbie Brown's "50 easy party cakes." Ever since Sylvia Weinstock was on Martha Stewart's "The Apprentice" and gave bad advice to a team, I don't think much of her.

I got rid of mine. It was nothing special for a lot of money. I sold it on Amazon. I love Cakes to Dream on!

Hi MelC,

This is funny because I just left the library and I looked through the Sweet Celebration book and was so disappointed...didn't even check it out icon_lol.gif

I agree with everything you said about this book.

I did get a good buy this morning for the Wilton Way of Cake Decorating, Volume III from Amazon for $10.00 which includes shipping.

Maybe you can put it on e-bay to sell if you don't want it.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I received a gift certificate for X-mas and ordered the books myself, so returning it is no problem.

I bought mine several years ago and was really impressed with her cakes. But I think the time/design has changed a lot and maybe thats the reason why her book isn´t "that" good anymore ...

But I think if you can afford it, keep it. I bought a book from Cecile Bellfleur Burbridge (sp) when I started decorating and I think it was still old then. But in the mean time I really like to look through and get alot of techniques from it.
